Francis has created a fun homebrew race here. Thank you! I think this version has a balanced approach to avoid overpowering player characters, and has some intriguing racial abilities to choose from. What I like best about this build is its great flexibility--you could compose a Salamdrid to make for a great fighter, cleric, rogue, sorcerer, even bard. The tables let you roll or pick different colors and habitats of origin (urban or wilderness, land or water all equally possible). The ten different racial traits--some bold, some sneaky-- would suit different classes. The tendency of Salamdrids to take after other races they interact with reminds me of another of my favorite unusual 5e races, the Tortle.
If you were to improve on this, I'd suggest adding some pictures, either by collaborating with an illustrator/artist friend or even just using public domain photos of newts and salamanders to show off their beautiful colors. You could also take the tables you've created and make some specific subraces located in specific locales of the Forgotten Realms.
I'm making a party for water based adventures and what we were missing was a stealthy, stalwart little Salamdrid rogue. Now I can have one! Thanks!
