A nice simple PDF for shields in 5e. The pdf never tries to do to much or to little, and it is a fair deal given the price and work of refinment that has gone intot he product over time. Would buy again.

Really great material. Well put together and well thought out. I've always thought 5e was lacking in shield diversity and this really shores that up well, as well as providing an excellent framework for making even more shields as needed. Can't wait to implement it in my games, both as a player and DM.

Thank you, I am glad you like it! I have been quite busy the last few months and do not find myself looking back here as often as I should, but happy to see people are still taking a look at this document :)

The Player who wanted to build a paladin with a barn door sheild was very happy I got this particular download. It gives him an AC high enough he simply wades through the minions accepting all their attempts to hit him with opportunity attacks so he can stomp the big bad. Very cool.

Well done on the effort! What is missing is information on weight, would match nicely with the relative size table. I offer these balance notes (in my opinion) and suggestions:

  1. Remove bash damage by default. Instead, introduce shield spikes as a shield upgrade, that will cause damage on a successful bash. (And yes, you are correct in disallowing bashing with a large shield.)
  2. Stun is way too powerful to be able to inflict it as a base option. Instead, perhaps you can have it imposed as a condition on a critical hit with a bash instead of doing increased damage.
  3. Cover on the large shield is a bit problematic (as has been pointed out by another reviewer), since it requires handling of facing, and 3/4 cover that you can take with you is by default too much. Instead, drop the cover benefit, and have large shields give +3 AC.
  4. You do not really need a separate "bash" option, the default "shove" would work fine. And point 2, above, can be the extra benefit if you shove with a shield. Using shove also takes care of action economy (shove is an attack substitution option). 5a. On "Feat Compatibility": If you treat bash as shoving, the Shield Master feat works fine with all shields as is. You only need to tweak its bonus action option for large shields (since you cannot bash with them). You can either let it allow shoving even with large shields, or have large shields grant half cover until the start of your next turn. 5b. The Dual Wielder feat's "+1 AC" benefit could instead be made to allow small shields on the off-hand wrist if the off-hand weapon is light.

So, I am going to say 1st off congrats on getting to this step and publishing this. I apologize if I word something badly or what not just ask me to clarify. Also I will say upfront that some of this is just personal prefernce as well.

Content Review I think the content over all is good for someone who doesn't already have another shield system in place. I like the Shove and Stun mechanic except I think it should be a choice to deal damage or do the shove / stun. . I think if you look into Kolbold Presses Beyond the Damage book what you have reminds me of how they do some weapons with special features. I love the idea of the additional factors with the Feat.

There are a few things that I think are not going to work well with some of the things you have listed.

Large shields 3/4 cover option seem weak to need such a higher requirement to use it. 3/4 cover is easy to negate by the enemy shifting aound the enemy without leaving his threat range. If you assume the character pivots that means their back is no longer with 3/4 cover which means his back is exposed and other enemies can attack him without his cover mattering. I think the Tower shield idea is great, but i would add a strict 3 armor to it and still have the cover concept with it.

I find it strange that the small shield does more damage then medium shield Also there is no prices or wieght. I would think finesse would be good to include on the light shield as it is something I could see a more dexterious player picking up. I would add Heavy Shield Profiency to some of the classes as the Tower Shield takes generally a lot more training to use properly on a battle field. This also is good for someone like me who runs the Ecumbrance variant where strength isn't required on armor.

Non-Content Review I think there is a lot of wasted space. This could be a me problem though. I am on a 2g (less then dial up) internect connection so the file size took awhile to download. But over that I think that the space was just stuffed in. Page 1 is cool. Page 2 I feel could be moved to the website DMGuild page. Same with the credits at the end. I feel that there is no need for a table of contents. There isn't enough here to warrant one plus I assume all PDF readers have a content feature built into it, but maybe not idk. I honestly think a clean table with all 3 shields would be better then all the space that is taken up. There also was some wierd thing where each page had a 2 inch (guess) white bar for some reason.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the content at all and I think that overall it would work just fine as it is, but I could see some approvments. I didn't even get into ideas I have about bucklers vs light shields ect ect. That is not for me to just throw in here. Thank you for taking the time to make this.

Content - When I originally started this document I did so without other supplements in mind, which may explain why it is not quite optimized. My basis on the small shield doing more damage to bash than medium and above was that the smaller shield would be lighter, easier to swing and thus gain more momentum to attack with. While a character may be strong enough to wield a large shield I cannot expect them to also swing it around. If that makes sense? I will also take in the other queries and comments you have made towards my next update. Non-Content - I hadn't even thought about this side of things before, but on the next version I will update the format and do some pc/mobile testing across a small audience. If you would like to check this again in a week or so I am sure it will be done by then, I'd love to hear any more feedback you have on this though!

This is a good beginning for it and while ill still probably use it in my D&D sessions it does require some more work.

One of my biggest queries is that in the newest 4th version of the book is that the small shields do more bashing damage than the medium ones. A feature i would love to see added would be shield spikes that could perhaps add 1d4 or so piercing damage instead of bludeoning but might negate the push back feature or something.

All in all, This is quite good and i hope that it continues to be improved and I am looking forward to any changes that will occur.

I like it! Its a short, easy to understand and easy to implement supplement. Few of my players (currently none) use shields, but that doesn't mean that my NPCs and villains can't start using shields the way you've laid out.

Looking forward to seeing what the 'Fear Compatibility' section looks like. Gave it 4 stars in anticipation of the final product ;)

The "Feat" Compatibility you mean? Another reviewer asked me recently how I intended this material to work with 5th Edition's existing "Shield Master" feat. I did however run out of time to add it for this version. I am glad you enjoy it, it's come a long way already since the initial draft haha.

I really like this idea and I think it has a lot of potential. My only complaint is that I don't think it's quite there yet. The addition of Bash attacks is a nice touch, but this product needs a small explanation of when and how you can use them; is it its own Action? Is it something you can do as part of an Attack action (so can a character with multiple attacks hit something with a sword and then perform a shield bash, for example?). Similarly, I'd like to know how you intend this to work in conjunction with some of the shielf-specific feats in the Players Handbook.

This is a good product and with a little work an experienced GM will be able to make use of this, but I'd like to see the author revisit it and flesh out what is a great initial idea a little more.

Only suggestion would be the art for Shields. Should show what they are and size compared to medium humanoid. Also, cost of shield would be helpful

Thank you for your feedback! That does indeed sound like a good addition and I shall aim to add it to the next version of the document within the next few weeks, hopefully with suggestions from other feedback as well.

Sorry, I mean't to say DAYS. If the changes are minimal then I see no reason for it to take very long. But thank you for your interest and I hope you like the content I will be continuing to release!
pixel_trans.gif
I have since added the comparison table for creatures of different sizes against shield sizes. You may be pleased to know I have an artist working on something more visual on the topic also! I will add costs to the list of points for the next revision.
