Good product, the spells inside are plentiful, and very well done. There are a few unbalenced ones, but you can just not use those ones or make a few changes. Overall the book has added alot to my games. Definitely worth checking out.

This book contains a huge amount of awesome spells. Not all are balanced but that really doesn't matter because there are so many. As a dungeon master you can pick and choose which ones you like and add them to your world. A personal favorite of mine is Death Spider which turns one of a targeted creature's limbs into a spider that tries to murder them. Quality.

I was disappointed in both the spells and magic items presented. The former have a lot of balancing issues and the latter didn't have as many options and they are mostly for higher tiers of play.

It's a fantastic book! I immediately thought of this for my Wizard character. If there was anything else I would prefer out of this, is that each spell had the classes listed that could use it, so i wouldnt have to go back to the index, then back to the spells, then back to the index, etc.

Elminster's Guide to Magic is a certified DM's Guild Masterpiece by the Going Last Tabletop Gaming Podcast!

When I think about wizardry, I always think about great libraries filled with the lore of the ancient mages who came before. Dusty tomes that link a low level wizard to powerful names like Tenser and Melf and Mordenkainen, not simply because of the spells, but because of the knowledge and advice and guidance these sages could provide. So what did this incredible list of authors create? Exactly what I've always been looking for.

Elminster's Guide starts out strong, devoting the first ten pages to the wizardly banter and lore I'd always wanted. This essay by the elder Ashemmon Blackstaff gives advice to new wizards, from their choice of specialization, to top spells at every level, to the kinds of spells a wizard might choose to study. Of course, such knowledge can't simply come from a single source, so Elminster's asides help fill the pages, giving his own opinion and pointing out poor Ashemmon's fallibility. The whole thing is tons of fun to read, and most importantly, filled with useful tidbits for any new wizard!

Then we hit the meat of the book, over a hundred pages detailing more than 350 incredible new spells for every spellcasting class. While a few have been pulled from other sources and updated for 5th Ed, many of these seem brand new to me. And, as I'd hoped, Elminster's quips and asides continue throughout!

The Great Artifact is the name given to the Rod of Seven Parts, used here as a lead-in to a ton of new and wonderful magic items. The Rod of Seven Parts has never been my favorite basis for an adventure, but so many of the other Rings and Rods presented that have been around since 1st and 2nd ed are certainly worth delving into a dungeon to incorporate into a campaign. With a another pair of pages on Strange Elixirs and a new set of Trinkets, this is a great addition to any DMs bag of rewards.

With all of that done, a lesser set of authors might stop there. New items, new spells, the addition of magical wonder and delight for any player or DM... it could be enough. But that's when this Guide takes another dive back into world-building. A long list of famous spellbooks, names for wizard towers, a table of sample verbal spell components, and then a deep dive into the magical factions of Faerûn which adds new archetypes and ideas for any player? Seriously, this book never stops being incredible.

Whether you're a fan of wizards, or new spells, powerful magic items, or just a bunch of wonderful writers at the top of their game, Elminster's Guide to Magic is absolutely the book for you. With 178 pages of amazing ideas brought to life, this book is absolutely worth the price tag. In fact, it's exactly the kind of book that should be pushing DMs Guild price tags up to where they should be! This is an incredible effort that should be financially rewarded! Highly, highly recommended.

This spell book is probably the single best magic resource for all core DnD5e classes. Mildly humerous interjection, lore about caster schools, A GUIDE FOR VERBAL COMPONENTS and a truckton of new spells.

Loads and loads of new sorcerer spells too, which is nice. Highly reccomend this as a core addition, it's so nice to have spell options.

I am currently doing an extensive review of this product (on the comments section) because I cannot allow much of the content from this book on my game table. I love the fact that many old spells have been brought up to 5th edition and I would love to be able to use this book liberaly with my players but some glaring balance issues exist. When these problems are corrected I will return to my rating and adjust it accordingly.

At this price it's a steal. Great addition to the rather flat list of 5e spells in the PHB. I had the volume printed and bound with a plastic coil. A black card stock back page and clear plastic front page so I could give players access at the table. I liked the verbal component list in addition to the crazy amount of additional spells.

While the content is vast in quantity and very grand in scale, as of release and errata the quality of objects are questionable in a lot of areas. Subclasses especially are ludicrously powerful in certain areas, or poorly designed in others. Spells vary from decent to competitive, to best-in-slot, to completely broken in power, and basically a DM allowing use of this book would have to specifically read through each spell to check to see whether it's going to be a problem and fix some things that crop up (If you are willing to do this kind of thing, you will definitely get enjoyment out of the book). In the end, if you take everything from the book, I believe it renders swathes of the PHB options obsolete. If used solo, I could see this being interesting, but content here definitely pulls caster classes ahead of those without spellcasting in a lot of areas. I want to like this content, I love the nature to which the content has been provided and outside of balancing and a couple of unusual wordings for spells, everything is rather well done. And I very much appreciate the effort that has gone into it, but unfortunately as of writing there are too many balancing issues for this to be introduced into a campaign smoothly without significant effort from a DM to balance the content, or without it causing significant issues with balancing that can "step on toes" so to speak with players not using content in this book.

I will say that the creators are taking steps to adjust areas that seem imbalanced, so in future this product may - and hopefully will - be refined to be comparative to official content. When this is the case, I will happily adjust my rating accordingly.

I really enjoyed going through the book, the fluff and Elimenster's commentary is fantastic and the spells fill a large number of niches. I'll be letting my players use these lists becsuse they are fantastic.

What a great book! Anyone that wants to play a wizard should pick this up and everyone else too because it is a very entertaining read! New spells, old spells, strange spells and some spells just for fun, this book has it all! Great advice and strategies are also included and will help you build the suitable spell-caster to match your gaming style. Easily one of my top five favorite DM’s Guild releases to date!
