Good module; better than the Tier 1s in Season 8. DM'd it at a convention in a 4-hour slot. Finished both story objectives and bonus B for 3 ACPs /TPs. I printed a map of Skullport showing Skull Island, which made the bridge more understandable. Lots of interesting NPCs in this one so I used different voices to separate them: Bosskyn: Gangster Boss Zsokshia: Hyper & lisps Tasselgryn: Sexy grandma Fel'rekt & Krebbyg: Outrageous French Bruldryn: Hardcore detective ("Just the fact, ma'am") Sundeth: Menacing but high-pitched (like Mike Tyson)

In The Poisoned Quill, I made sure to stress to the party that the bridge to Skull Island is the only way in and is well guarded by the Xanathar Guild, so the party needed to think of a way to get inside. I find if you're not that explicit, many parties will resort to combat. As it turned out, the Bard did a great job bluffing their way in, which was good because he struggled in the combat encounters. As the characters approached the bridge, I had them pass the group of 5 adventurers and hear the halfling say, "Really look!" and he does this pitiful jig, like he can't dance. "I have an 18 dexterity for Loviatar's sake!" They got a medalion from that encounter. I also had the two Drow propose the escape mechanism in return for finding their compatriot. When that encounter was wrapping up, I had a Flameskull float by, stop, rotate ominously towards the group and say, "Freeze Lawbreakers!" The Drow wink at the party then face the Skull with a raspberry and a wave with his thumb on his note, and run away drawing the Skulls away. The party hears fireballs going off in the distance. I wasn't prepared for the party to bluff their way past Sundeth but as two members were going up the stairs I had him recognize the cleric's holy symbol of Lathander on his shield. The party curb-stomped this encounter pretty easily. On the second level, I stressed the violence of ripping the key out of the prisoner's belly and made her a someone to protect and heal, which always makes for tough choices for the party. Also, I stressed that one of the escaping prisoners was a one-handed female goblin--Grumble from DDAL8-12. The third level was a good fight, especially both castings of Insect Plague. I just wish I would have remembered to summon the Yochlol and do a Dominate Person, but like I said, it was a good fight.
