The quality of the scan is good. The rules are a precursor to the D&D 3.0/3.5: it is a miniatures game version of AD&D. Combat is simplified in the mechanics such that most fighter types will have one hit per level. In other words, a 5th level Fighter will sustain 5-6 hits, before dying/being removed. It is AD&D combat lite.

In addition to the game mechanics, this book has a decent painting guide. Every pair of pages features a painted miniature, complete with game statistics for use in combat. You get spell templates, which work well when photocopied, or scanned and printed, onto transparencies.

You may still want to have your Monster Manual, Player's Handbook, and Dungeon Masters Guide handy, as you may not find all creatures listed within the pages of this book. Not all magic spells, and items, are detailed within this book, either.

I plan to play out the Giant Series of modules (G, G2, and G3) using these rules. With WorldWorks Games sets such as the wooden fort from "Seaworks: The Legend of Skull Cove," I can model the Hill Giant fort in 3-D. The Glacial Rift will be fairly simple to produce using styrofoam sheets cut into appropriate shapes, and painted white, and for the mountain lair of the Fire Giants, I will use appropriate marbled black, vinyl floor tiles cut to shape, to portray the volcanic caverns. I have been planning this for a couple of years, and with these rules to play them out, I can finally do what I dreamed of, 20 years ago: playing out the modules in 3-D, with mini's and terrain, without resorting to using the uber-tedious RPG combat system. Using BattleSystem Skirmishes, I can cut the combat calculations to less than one-half the time it would otherwise take to resolve these combat-heavy games.

I have played some test games using high level PC's, against Giants, and it was relatively quick, and fun, to resolve the horrendous combat. Unlike the RPG sessions from 20 years ago, these combats were resolved much faster, with similar results, but without all of the complexities double-digit HP's, and d4-3d6 weapon damages, and all of that other tedium. If you are looking to simplify your RPG combat, this is one way to do it. If you want to revisit the old school days of hacking first, and questioning later, this is the rule set for just that approach. You can do the RPG thing, if you like, or you can just get down to the combat, straight away, without all the nibbling away, with double-digit Hit Points, and weapons doing 1d4 points of damage, ad nauseum. These rules trim things down, and speed combat up, without losing the flavor.

A good set of rules, with solid AD&D qualities and feel, plus a decent painting guide. This is a very high quality product, for a very affordable price. Cheers!
