(Spoiler-free review)

I played this adventure as a player with other friends.

I felt that the atmosphere in this adventure was quite unique, unlike the other adventures that I have played in Adventurer's league. As a big fan of mysteries, I really liked that each NPC had distinct personalities and their own secrets. Depending on what parts of The Waystop that the party chose to explore, or which NPCs they helped, different things were slowly discovered as the party unravels the secret behind The Waystop.

From my experience playing the adventure, I felt that this is a roleplay heavy and exploration based module, and there's always a chance to avoid the combat if desired. Players that are more passive and tend to shy away from roleplaying might have a more difficult time in this adventure (and might require some prompts by the DM). Combat is somewhat tough but brief, partly because when I played the module I was using an underleveled character (and an imbalanced party), and interacting with the NPCs more earlier on might have helped us piece together the mystery behind The Waystop faster.

Really liked the horror vibes as well, though embarassing to admit I was a bit scared of the narrative elements as I'm not really good with scary things, but overall it was a fun and myterious adventure that I would love to play again!

My players and I really enjoyed this adventure even though we're not very big on roleplay heavy games. We are however big horror movie buffs, and The Waystop hit all the right notes for us. It highlights some popular tropes, and subverts them later to excellent effect, and we had fun trying to figure out which movies inspired the scenes (we thought of The Sixth Sense and the Shining).

Initially, I had some reservations about how open ended the narrative was, but everything went smoothly once the players and NPCs started actively interacting. My players were pretty suspicious about the NPCs (they thought the NPCs were ghosts), so they stuck with each other the whole time and refused to go to sleep, then started panicking when Part 2 began because they'd used some spell slots earlier and had not recovered them.

This is going to be my go-to horror adventure for Halloween from now on. I'll also be using The Waystop whenever I need to whisk players off to Barovia for Curse of Strahd. The adventure is practically made for it.

Spoiler Free Review of CCC-RPSG-04: The Waystop

I am a huge fan of Jason Koh. he is truly a very talented writer. I purchased this mod expecting it to be something similar to his amazing Neverdusk Trilogy. But was very pleasantly surprised to learn that it has a very different theme and structure. This is a horror, thriller, and suspense themed mod that really takes elements of our favorite horror movies. Players will be on their toes the entire time.

This is an RP Heavy mod. Combat is fairly brief, but absolutely not easy. It's well constructed to a point where the combat compliments the theme rather than overwhelms it (which tends to be the case in several mods).

There is a lot of Player and DM freedom in The Waystop. Once you have a good understanding of the mod, you can more or less just throw it away and be surprised with what the players do. This makes it more fun for the DM to run, because even the players will end up surprising you!

All in all, I'm ranking this mod very high in my compendium. It's now one of my all time favorite T1 mods that I think players will really get a kick out of.

I consider this to be a MUST BUY for any RP Heavy DM.

The Waystop is impressively written, and stands out as an adventure that pushes the boundaries of quality storytelling in AL.

The B-grade horror opening notwithstanding, the adventure has a layered story that features a fantastic cast of NPCs, an incredibly atmospheric set, and some very creative uses for a monster from Mordenkainen's that is seldom seen. Every clue in the adventure is deliberate, and every scene with an NPC is an opportunity to peel back their masks or to uncover more of the plot. Having multiple twists and endings (some mutually exclusive) adds to the replay value.

Players who are more passive, or who are more used to the typical hack'n'slash adventure may require some handholding. While preparing the adventure, I also found it helpful to read the Dramatis Personae after the Background, as a good grasp of the NPCs and their motivations can help put the rest of the story into context.

Hi all. I had the opportunity to read this to prepare for a future gameday here. This is a perfect example of how someone can take an DDAL CCC Adventure Seed and spin it into a very compelling adventure! The narrative is written rather eloquently and does get a little bit wordy at times. There are some themes here that might need to be tempered down for younger players since this adventure presents as a mystery/horror adventure.

The design presents, "Shade Rules"; what appears to be a "Pillars of Play" sidebar that applies to the creatures in the adventure throughout. They present it as a Appendix, which is helpful. I was a bit confused as to who Ka'Chua was. It mentions the name several times in the adventure before actually telling you (on pg. 15) that Ka'Chua is an intellect devourer and that it is amongst the vengeful shades, plotting seperatly from the vengful shades (the other creatures prominent in the adventures). I was expecting to know about Ka'Chua way at the beginning of the adventure (in the Background, maybe?). Reading the entire adventure prior to running it reveal Ka'Chua and its motivations in the Dramatis Personae.

The transition to Part Two advises you to, "...take note of clues the characters uncovered, the Key Events completed as well as the NPCs that survived" (p. 16). Be aware that you need to do this beforehand so if you get to this point and did not record the information down, it might take a few moments of play to do so.

There are some great color maps there for those that use them. If there is a way to get B&W ones that are discernible that would be a great addition to this adventure.

There are alot of little intruigues going on in this adventure that make me appreciate the adventure. It seems to me to be better sutied for an RP heavy session. There were too many reasons for me to enjoy it in just reading it that I felt compelled to write this feedback before I even run it. Great job Jason Koh and team!

Thank you Marcello for your excellent feedback! It's great to know that you enjoyed the reading, and I hope your players have a lovely time playing. We'll be including a set of NPC Reference Sheets together with our regular DM Cheat Sheet in an upcoming release, and that should hopefully make it easier for DMs to identify the NPCs too. We hear you on the B&W maps and how they may not print as well due to color profiles and contrast settings. Let us take a look into them yeah? :D

This twist on the old haunted house is nuanced, and has plenty of scares that will keep players on their toes. It also drives home the importance of not splitting the party, which we learned the hard way after separately losing a rogue and a ranger. We managed to complete the adventure despite that, because we figured out how to avoid combat.

We enjoyed interacting with the NPCs. Each of them had personality and a reason to be "sus", and weren't just talking heads to be used and thrown away by the DM.

The Waystop was fun, and my players had a great time. The author's writing really brings out the creepy atmosphere, and the sense of dread really builds up if you play this using theater of the mind.

I find the adventure to be very player driven, and it is definitely easier to run if you are a more experienced DM. It rewards players for actively engaging with the NPCs and their surroundings, especially those who are good at asking the right questions.

The NPCs are very well written, with clear personalities, goals and motivations, and we had some great "Ah-ha!" moments when the players discovered the NPC's secrets. The use of Key Events and Extra Events really stood out and was a first for me, and the way the ending changes helps creates the impression in the players' minds that their decisions matter.

The emphasis on roleplaying in this adventure means that those who prefer combat will have to adjust their expectations. There can be combat, and you can expect it to be challenging if it happens, but there are ways to circumvent it. Murderhobos in this adventure will probably die.

I'll be waiting for the cheat sheet. I would love to see how the Director's Cut is like.

Thanks for your kind words. We promise you that the Director's Cut will be an absolute blast. We'll be putting out a Cheat Sheet, and some NPC reference sheets as soon as we hit Copper (hopefully soon), and we hope these QOL improvements will help make the process smoother!
