I played this twice, once with beginner players and once with seasoned adventurers, both times we had much fun! I left out the ghost, because he was too powerful in my opinion. I think it's great if you have many newish players, because they can explore the mechanics of D&D without having a complex character sheet. It is also great for a sudden oneshot, - I played it when two of my regular couldn't come on short notice and since there is a prep time of like max. 10minutes and no character creation, it was perfect! It's also great for the more advanced players to roleplay some undead creatures ;)

An entertaining adventure with a fun premise, albeit one that relies on a TPK. It would also work pretty well as a one-shot without featuring any existing characters. The adventure doesn't look particularly challenging and it certainly isn't very complex, but the simplicity is probably more plus than minus here.

Just finished running this adventure as a solo 4th level Sorlock and it fit very well into my character development as the PC had died in a desert tomb that had the Necronomicon Book of the Dead, so it only made sense that a Necromancer would eventually seek out the book and Speak with Dead to discover the tomb secrets and retrieve the Book along with reviving any dead as Undead.

Coming back as a Ghost was just too powerful and too easy as my PC immediately discovered how to undo the last failed saving throw that ended her life, but she thanked the BBEG before doing so, but this made him her archenemy, setting up the next installment.

I would limit to Ghast as the most powerful Undead to return as or some other Undead of similar CR.

I wanted to like this. I really, really did. It has the characters playing undead - what a fun twist! It had a jailbreak setup - my favourite trope! This should have been great, but it's just not.

1) The Dungeon Criminally linear, and the way it's laid out the party can literally skip almost half the rooms with pretty much no repercussions. The players wake up, walk to the boss room, and leave. THat's it, that's the whole adventure. This could have so easily been solved with just a more complex dungeon layout and a few extra obstacles.

2) The jailbreak The players start chained to a wall, oh no! But whoever's playing the ghost can pass through walls and free them so... it may as well not even be a factor. The players don't have to figure anything out, so they don't feel accomplished for escaping. A very anticlimactic start.

In terms of escape, their primary obstacle is a zombie. One zombie who's been nerfed. Even for level one characters this is a cakewalk.

Overall: a great concept squandered. There's a one page dungeon called a Debt for the Dead, go play that instead.

A short, fun adventure where the party must escape using sudden changes in skills, abilities and stats. Took my two players (And a NPC Skeleton I had) about 3 hours to play through. Worth more than the .99 cents the game suggests!

I loved it. It was nicely written, and I used it with The Carvan of the Damned on a prison island. Leaving the rewards to when they return. It also helped me move the main plot forward and got them to where I wanted them without them realising that I just railroad them. (Shhhh)

Death Is Only The Beginning is a fun take on the idea of an adventure beginning with a TPK.

The PCs 'awaken' as the victims of a somewhat inept necromancer. The characters travel through a fairly linear dungeon towards their final encounters and at the conclusion of the adventure the stage is set in classic horror movie fashion for the villain to make his own unexpected return at a future point in the campaign.

I really like the setup, execution, and presentation of Death Is Only The Beginning but for my own campaign I will be making two changes. First up, I will be removing the magic item from room 9. I get the intention behind the item but if it is not used in the way the authors intended it could become unbalancing for a campaign, having said that if I was going to run this as a pure one-shot I would leave it as-is as that wouldn't be a concern. My second change is more one of personal taste, I'm going to revise the list of undead creatures the PCs awaken as. Conceptually I struggle both with the idea of one of the PCs waking as a ghost, and I also don't like the visual of a PC skeleton, I'll probably go with fleshier undead.

In spite of those changes I'm really happy with the adventure and am really happy with the idea of slotting it into my next Ravenloft campaign.
