From the moment I heard about these books (on Ginny Di), I have been delighted and fascinated. I bought the first book a few months ago, and I've just bought the other two.

The sample on DM's Guild shows you much of how it all works, and the Table of Contents show you all the options available in that book. This is a good one to start, since it has all the main D&D races and then some.

I love this concept, and these books develop it brilliantly! There is so much flexibility, and it's very balanced and well thought out. My son and I have really enjoyed all the cool and outlandish options, and imagining how these offspring might turn out. I hope that D&D will someday incorporate a system like this. Thank you so much for developing this.

My physical copy hasn't eve printed yet, but one of my players used the PDF to build their character. I'm already thrilled with the options this gives them, especially for the more experienced players. I'm also happy that this gives my world less connection to the racial essentialism that's baked into D&D character creation. Thanks, authors! A very cool, super easy way to make a change for the better.

Absolutely love this book! Worth every penny, and I am excited to see what characters my players might make with these tools. (and the characters that I am going to make as well.) Going to be a staple for every 5e game that I run from now on.

I adore this book! It is great to have the options of so many more racial combos then we have ever been given before! I love that you can create a character from any world, and make it fit somehow. I made a Firbolg/Grung, something I never thought would exist, and I love her!

While complex, it is easy to understand and gives so much varying options. Especially the upbringing section is a great way to make my players start thinking about their characters. This publication has become a central aspect of our session zeros at my table!

I love this book. It draws on the racial features that are already available and opens them up for more flexibility and customization. I like how many options there are, with some races having different sets of abilities to choose from. It does a great job of tackling bioessentiallism in D&D while still staying true to the distinguishing features of different races. I like the upbringings system as well because you can choose Ability Score Increases and/or features that suit your character build, and because it supports backstory development.

I made a character of mixed changeling and dragonborn heritage with the consular upbringing, and I would not have had the tools to make this character without this book. Since the racial features are based on existing 5e features, my character is still well-balanced. It also means that this character creation system is an attractive option and an easy pitch even for DMs who are sticklers for the rules.

Thank you so much for this great system! I am excited to play my changeling-dragonborn character and will definitely want to use these mechanics again for future characters.

This is a great sourcebook, especially for those looking for more customization in their character creation, or even just a non traditional character that doesn't unbalance the game. I would however like to see an update in the future with some minor additions: This has height modifiers but what about weight averages? Or starting age modifiers? Again, minor items but worth adding to take some of the guess work out for the less traditional parentages. That said, I feel this is definitely worth the money. Thanks for making such a great guide.

This is my favorite version of alternative race rules that I've seen thus far. It does the best job of seperating species and culture while still letting them be key factors in a character's skillset. I especially like the movement of ability score benefits to culture rather than species. Great work, excited to see what else comes of it, and if I make any homebrew 'races' in the future I'm definitely using this ruleset first.

An Elf and an Orc Have a Baby

“An Elf and an Orc Had a Little Baby addresses the bioessentialism by emphasizing upbringing alongside heritage and largely decoupling skill bonuses from parentage.”

“in this supplement, instead of choosing one monolithic “race,” you have three decisions to make: two birth parents and an upbringing.”

“You are a sentient individual with agency to make your own choices. Your alignment is not confined by your parentage, upbringing, background, or class”

Reading the introduction truly raised a wave of goosebumps and hairs all over me in an undeniable physical and emotional reaction to the beauty of the words and their true understanding of the complexity of what makes us who we are. My biological father has never been a part of my life, I am forever warped and moulded by the family who raised and, in many ways, rejected me, and my friends, chosen family and myself have all added to the mix of who I am today; a character!

Working from a sensible base of the prospective adventurer’s all existing equally in the aether before creation, this supplement works through a phenomenal 35 potential Parentages, covering all possibilities of D&D from Aarocka to Yuan-Ti, with background to each potential birth parent and the traits (or traits as some have various sets of traits to choose from) they add to the character’s genealogical background, with a number of wonderful example characters along the way, and a whopping 82 potential Upbringings, which cover all many of settings, situations, temperaments, careers, creatures, religions, etc., and the features and traits they convey.

Also included are 12 Dragonmarks from Eberron with the features and Spells these marks confer.

If all of the above were not enough to create the apotheosis of the character you have in mind, a full breakdown of features and traits with assigned scores by Parentage with the variance of totals the Parentages as presented in the main body of this supplement. The same is provided and broken down for each Upbringing. Together this allows for total control of all aspects of Parentage and Upbringing for ultimate customisation within balanced parameters, allowing for the most specific, nuanced and perfect mix for you and your characters.

Whether you use the super simple and simply brilliant base system as presented or the optionally exquisitely specific one, this supplement is truly an informed, aware and inspired step forward in continuing discussion about who, how and what makes up a D&D character, and how to create them just how we envision them.

Unbelievably gorgeous cover! On the cover, Atornii depicts a loving couple holding a future adventurer in their arms
