So I've spent almost all the time since I bought this just reading through and disgesting it and I absolutely love it. I am a big fan of Alex Clippinger anyway, his work on bringing an alternative look and extra flavour to classes like Warlock and Barbarian is superb, but this is something extra special.

For a start, the layout is gorgeous, the art is beautiful and it feels like something that should sit pride of place on display not just in my ever growing horde of PDFs. Each piece is well chosen and it really helps to add a sense of grounding and life to the creatures throughout. More than once I found myself being drawn in by a piece of art and needing to find out more about the creature behind it. All the sections are easy to read, the stat blocks are easy to find and the overall feel is a PDF that you can easily get lost in. I know because I have.

The true delight of this book though is the writing. Every section comes with lore and explanations of the creatures as well as examples and variant ideas, which mechanically are as good as everything I have come to expect from the author. The stat blocks are brilliantly constructed and bring a feeling of challenge and a difference from the normal 'hit the meat bag until it runs out of HP' that happens with a lot of creatures. That challenge does not transfer to the DM however as the stategies and ease of use of the stat blocks is superb. Even new or inexperienced DMs will be able to run these monsters brilliantly and that is a real testament to the work put in here.

None of that can really do justice to the sense of excitement and engagement that you get when you read the lore, there is a palpable sense of connection to the monsters and a real feeling of both love and understanding from the writer. These are not just there to be hero fodder and it shows. Honestly as a DM reading through this, every section brought a real flurry of ideas and a sense of 'oh boy, I really want to run a game with this'. I haven't felt that inspiration and just sheer joy from a bestiary or something similar in a long time. It makes me excited at the possiblity of seeing my players encounter things in this book, of being able to run things with this much love and care behind them. From elder evils to lamias to spirits to vampires, every single creature in here would make an amazing campaign villain and Alex Clippinger and the other writers have provided everything you need.

I cannot possibly recommend this highly enough and I think it should be a cornerstone of most DMs collections. Outstanding.
