Just run a oneshot for my party and we've had an absosulte blast. This thing is amazing! Ton of avaliable options and material, so it wouldn't be the same again. My players missed a good portion of clues (was my fault) and still had amaizing time.

PS some of the links weren't working in the doc, but it wasn't a problem to find the material.

Ran this for spooky season and had a lot of fun, though it ended up being a three-shot instead of a one-shot because that's what always happens when I run a one-shot. Would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a Halloween-themed game.

Minor criticisms (really, it might look like a lot of text, but it's super minor, play this adventure!)

  • S'Koobi's character sheet has a little weirdness in the Courage Crunch section. It says 3/day next to it, but then says "you can use a bardic inspiration..." and S'Koobi only gets one of those. My player overlooked the 3/day and just read the text and didn't end up using it. If I'd noticed it ahead of time I would've pointed it out and told him to ignore the bardic inspiration requirement. (We also thought S'Koobi derves higher Charisma which would've given him more bardic inspiration as well).
  • Dafni's distress point ability seems like more work than it's worth for the small benefit it provides, and my player ended up ignoring it and instead just used dice rolls to choose between various (unwise) choices of action, so Dafni kept getting into trouble regardless. (I recognize that in the show that character really didn't have a huge signature part, and that finding something clever for her was probably a challenge.)

Played this for a Halloween one shot. I DM'd.

My feedback: This is a really well put together module. After two readings I really felt that I understood what was going on and how it all went together. I made a few changes, mostly to make the investigation part of the enocunter easier. There are a few puzzles that require rolling 16+ twice in a row. As I wanted the party to succed and not be punished for their rolls I went with a "Fail Forward" approach. Failing the 2nd or even first roll allowed the Mystery team to keep moving and discovering more clues whilst being lightly punished with more fear checks and psychic damage.

From the players perspective, they felt the pre-gen characters were a little all over the place. As a DM I thought they were all fine and thematic. They wished there was more combat (Note: they skipped most of the combat based rooms) - and as a 1 shot with Pre-Gens I was okay with that.

For the final boss fight, I think the boss needs Legendary resistance. His recharge ability should be a Lair Action. He needs some minions as well, I think. He got (hilariously I should add) feared, stunned, then beaten to death by a pack of kids and their dog.

I really appreciated the authors forward discussing setting the tone of the adventure. My players all double downed into their character's roles from the OG show, I was soooooo pleased.

I'd absolutely pick up the sequel next Halloween!

So, this was the first one-shot (and really first anything) I'd EVER DM-d. It was easy to understand and run for a first-time DM and my players really enjoyed it. It had enough structure that I was never lost for something to say or present, but wasn't so structured I couldn't improv things to add creepyness. I wasn't sure I was cut out for DMing, but this definitley gave me the confidence boost I needed to keep doing it. The PDF was easy to follow and I really appreciated the links to other portions of the PDF. My players really enjoyed themselves as well. I'd recommend this one to anyone who might be interested.

I run it during Halloween night and it was really fun. Full of fun moments for the players, specially if they engage with the Scooby Lore and tropes. I would run it again without doubt, and probably buy the sequel.

I ran this with my regular group for Halloween and it was a big hit. The players loved the parody and small nods to the series, as well as the overall gameplay focusing less on combat and more on the search for clues. It was also nice that they could split up and act independently rather than coming to group decision of what to do next. I'll be picking up Night of Fright! 2 soon :)

Just played this with my regular crew after a several month hiatus due to a certain pandemic. We had a BLAST! I didn't want to reveal right away what we were playing so I sent them a message with a PDF listing just the race, gender, and class/level of the available choices and let them decide what they wanted to play. Once they chose, I sent a revised PDF with the character names and the token for each revealing what type of game we were really going to be playing. They loved it! Lots of old school hijinks and general goofiness ensued.

Pros:

It is a really fun adventure, with a loving parody to the entire Certain Cartoon Clue Crew and the sort of adventures they had creeping around old mansions with secret panels and creepy critters and frights. I think it was well balanced and they was a good variety of fights, frights, and puzzles, and opportunities for zaniness. The character sheets are realy good looking, the art work is fantastic, and even the goofy subclasses made to accomodate the characters have a lot of good crunch while still having that wacky flair. (Vell'mah's Spectacles DID get knocked off at least once in the adventure, so that right there was worth the price of admission.)

Cons:

I would have liked the handouts to be in separate JPGs to make it easier to display online. The character sheets are in JPG format, one per page; I ended up making PDFs of all 2 or 3 sheets per character so I could more easily send them to my players. Having NPC sheets for the NPCs would be nice, just to have their names, personalities, and some bare bones descriptions. I had to jump around a bit to find everything which made for a rocky start.

Overall, definitely worth the money to get, and a super fun adventure! So much so that I went out and bought the sequel, A Night of Fright 2: The Lich's Ghost for next year's Halloween one-shot. I will definitely recommend this one to my friends!

A nice fun adventure! Ran it for a halloween one shot and we had a lot of fun. We played it without using the premade characters and we didn't have any problems (except that i had to lower the DC of the investigation checks as none of my players had enough Int).

It really solved the question of "how do you do a one shot inspired on this classic show in a fantasy world with real ghosts?" and nailed it with its formula of having Scary encounters in one hand and Very Scary encounters in the other.

The only thing I would like to see improved are the maps, as there isn't a size stated to import them to VTT. And I had to crop and manually scale them. And sadly, the maps are black and white.

A solid adventure that was a hell of a lot of fun to run for a group of friends. Was very beginning friendly as well!

For the Players: The abilities you gain for each of the characters are unique and the new class archtypes that are within the adventure are really great and unique. Whole hearted would suggest bringing them to your DM and seeing about being able to run a character based off them. For those that maybe wanna remove the final human element that is Sha-Gi, the human monk, from the party, maybe see if the DM is cool with making him into a Firbolg instead.

For the DMs: I would suggest though that if you're going to run this adventure, if you get to climactic final fight, perhaps make the final encounter immune to being stunned or maybe give him some minor Legendary Actions/Legendary Save. My party's Sha-gi ran right up to him and Stunning Fist him 3 rounds in a row, making it so Vell'mah could just riddle him with all the crossbow bolts.

Overall, this was a great 6 hours well spent with a lot of great and funny moments. The Fear mechanics are great and make it possible to have the adventure run without always having to rely on the players remain in the characters that they're clearly based on.
