Mordenkainen’s Tome of Marvelous Magic II, designed by M.T. Black and Celeste Conowitch, is filled to the brim with delightfully witty and well-balanced magic items. The content brings feelings of nostalgia for when I was a kid and would sit in my room, flipping through the Magic Item Compendium to get ideas for my latest campaign.
As the pages scroll across my screen, I can see items that make me laugh in their pranking possibilities, such as a wand that lets you teleport objects around with a flick of your wrist, to wands that make my skin crawl with anticipation, like the Wand of Teeth. All of the items are uniquely described, and no two wands or rings are the same.
I noted almost immediately that there is something for every class or possible character concept that floats out of the ether and onto your gaming table. Your Monk, with the aid of an Elixir of Flaming Fist, can pommel their foe into cinders and ash, or your sneaky rogue can line up perfect sneak attacks with the aid of their prized Blink Ring. I even managed to run across items, like the Catstaff, that immediately threw me into making a Crazy Cat Lady named Agatha for my players to interact with.
The items range from the common rings that can make the lives of common folk smoother, to the stuff that you could base an entire campaign around (I’m eyeing you Staff of Miracles). The icing on top is the Random Magic Item tables included at the end of the book. They will aid any DM in fairly divvying up the latest Dragon’s hoard.
This book will bring my players hours of joy, and for that I cannot thank the team that put this together enough. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your tireless effort in giving us amazing content.
