The list of content is a bit misleading, which I found very frustrating.

I picked this up with limited prep time after finding out a key player would not be able to attend a session. I was initially very excited by the premise, however there's simply not enough information in the book to run it as an adventure. The included content is comparable to something you would find as a suggestion for a one shot. The most frustrating parts were the maps, and the monsters (the focal point of the "adventure")

The maps include no follow-up, and it's incredibly frustrating. Every included map is honestly something you could grab from Donjon in 20 seconds. They're labeled with room numbers and no description or indication of what exists in any of the rooms. In the first adventure, the author writes that the mind flayer is able to teleport between a nodes within the sewers, however the nodes are not labeled and there's no indication of where they should be. All of these add together to create what is basically a list of suggestions on how you could create a one shot using the existing themes.

The encounters also don't seem to have any thought of balance to them. The map laid out for the first adventure is incredibly claustrophobic, which means even a party of 5 characters will be stepping on each others toes, and there is very little in the way of decision making on the part of the party. The Mindflayer is suggested to try to isolate weak party members, however the method given to do this has no options to counter it unless someone happens to have disintegrate, and is effectively suggesting you just pick whoever is in the back of the marching order and kill them off.

Even the rough outlines of each hunt - despite lacking any actionable detail - are set up in such a way that creativity is heavily discouraged.

I will at least give that some of the ideas presented are creative. I appreciate the parallels drawn to pop-culture horror, and I won't discredit the amount of creativity required to put those ideas together. Regardless of that, the collection is half-finished and not appropriate to put up for sale.

Love this little book. It has a ton of tiny one-shots with a spooky theme. We ran the scarecrow one ON HALLOWEEN NIGHT and it was PERFECT and has spooked the table into killing every scarecrow they see! :-) Another "gang" of characters had a BALL in the Tomb- they never put together it's a scooby-doo mystery until after it was done!

Me, personally: I think the D&D published adventures start off a little strong, so I like the characters to be at Level 2 at kick-off, to give them a better chance to survive. This little PDF of one-shots has been a great pack of starters to get the players used to working together and getting them to level 2 in a fun and slightly spooky way!

now, some of the later adventures are much more dangerous: we haven't tried them yet, but I'm looking forward to it!

Well worth the money, hope your table enjoys it as much as we have.

Vall was looking for folks to review this bad pumpkin, and I was more than willing. It's a quick and easy add on to his and Jimmy's original Monster Hunts book - that one more specific to Avernus - but this one adds that Halloween spoopy touch. With a couple extra new hunts all with that fantastic cover - what a cute little beholder - Monster Hunts: Halloween is a perfect quick snag for anyone looking to put together a snappy wee Halloween adventure for All Hallow's. But the real reason you are going to buy this is the cover, because Vall knocked it out of the park with this one. For excellent mechanics easy for any DM to pick up and quick encounters - get yourself this book. Comics, Clerics, & Controllers d20 Roll: Nat 20

The adventures contained with Monster Hunts: Halloween are perfect for not only for spooky one-offs, but also modular enough to be inserted into any campaign for the perfect Halloween session! All the adentures are fully fleashed out with maps, items, npcs, and monster tactics, making them super easy to run. All of the individual hunts play off of the themes and tropes of popular Halloween media, and I've honestly had a blast just reading them. I definitely plan to run the Dreamscape Warriors adventure for my party's Halloween session this Friday!
