Decent enough book. I had to convert it to 3.5 for my uses, my only real issue is the quests feel kinda monotone to me.

Hellbound Heists 5e review

9 "Ocean's Eleven" style adventures, one in each layer of Baator with potential hooks and further leads into other stories. It has been a great place to start for my epic level epilogue adventure as a collection of ideas, settings and characters with needs/wants and resources.

A few things to note:

1) It was written assuming a much lower PC level and can require significant finagling to fit the PCs true CR

2) PCs don't tend to want to pull an Ocean's Eleven so much as a Doom Guy/Mad Max when going into hell. This led to some significant shift and homebrewing on my part to allow them to proceed without constant unsuccessful stealth/deception/research checks and what they perceived as boring stakeouts.

3) Some of the motives could be more cohesive. Some of the payouts more reasonable

4) Benefits from repeat characters showing up and becoming known faces instead of 'random npc of the day'. Also from tying in PCs wants/needs/goals into going deeper and deeper into Baator.

5) Don't give the cure for corruption. When done right with great players this is sone of the funnest RP chances they get. Paranoia having them chase a naked colleague around the bathroom calling them a doppleganger. Wrath having then make sacrifices or morally gray choices that make the party argue and fight. Resentment turning into a shade throwing sass fest that digs deep into longterm character flaws and party bonds. I had assumed the players would feel their agency was being jeopardized and so offered a divine intervention to make it all temporary. I didn't expect the feedback of missing the other rp they had planned.

I've ran 2 of the Heists so far and both were an absolute BLAST. These make for exciting post-game content in DiA and a couple of them can even be spliced into the main campaign as either one-shots or mini-arcs that let the players explore more of the Nine Hells, meet Archdevils and make those oh-so-important deals.

The writing and lore are stellar, the art has a classic DND vibe, I'd say this is a must have for any DM running DiA or any adventure involving the Hells.

Definetly the most ingenious and well thought out hell campaign I have come across. The aventures are details and mostly ready to use. I got lost a few times in the mire of lore and options, but they always gave me great ideas to run with. I would have bought this for the local descriptions and monsters alone. Even if you don't like hell campains, simply flavour them differently and you have a hiest with thrills on every corner.

Pros:

  • Nine full-length, detailed adventures that all take place in the layers of Hell.
  • Good variety of adventure styles from stealthy heists to prison breaks and even a devil-filled ball.
  • 40 pages of new magic items, monsters, and player handouts.

Cons:

  • Only one of the nine adventures features player-ready battle maps.

THE VERDICT: NINE LAYERS OF HELL BEQUEATH NINE EXCELLENT, HIGHLY DETAILED ADVENTURES FOR MID TO HIGH LEVEL PARTIES IN HELLBOUND HEISTS.

[Video Review: https://youtu.be/WQINBcjW_4M ]Hellbound Heists is a fantastic collection of upper tier diabolical adventures! If this is your first delve into the Nine Hells of the Forgotten Realms, fear not, the introduction includes a wealth of information summarizing each layer, explaining how a party may enter and leave the hells, and how the environment weighs on a party’s moral endurance through a corruption mechanic. Plus, the new background and faction provide simple pathways for players to weave their characters into the setting. The adventures range from literally railroaded (yes, there’s a train) to a sandbox masquerade -- my favorite quest! The layout is professional, and while the art ranges in quality, I particularly enjoy the pieces harkening back to the classic, inky black and white D&D art style.

Disclaimer: The project manager did send me a complimentary PDF copy for use in my video review (link above), but I still may buy the book because I know I’ll be more likely to run these adventures if I can leisurely read them in print!

Must...remain...calm...Okay, screw it, I can't. I FLACKING LOVE THIS BOOK! Adventure anthologies are always so cool to me cause you get to see so many styles coming together to create something cohesive and amazing - and Hellbound Heists is no exception at all. With nine amazing new heist-themed adventures set across the Nine Hells, this massive endeavor has brought some of the greatest minds on the Guild into one sulfur-smelling heavy-metal-spitting quest collection - all individuals who I have massive respect for. I am not going to get into details since I want to ensure that all of you have a chance to get it and see them for yourselves (but, definitely try out 6:66 to Mephistar if you can, my favorite), but know that the amount of detail, replay value, artfully done layout and visual storytelling beyond stellar encounter design makes this book stand out so much. And that is why I am honored to give it a Comics, Clerics, & Controllers Golden d20 Badge, cause gang, you earned it.
