Overall, this is a great little one-shot. I used it as the first story in a casual, episodic game and the players seemed to enjoy the npc's and were intrigued by the mystery. I didn't set any limits on characters, so we did have a goblin in the party, which made for an interesting connection and the potential for her to be taken over by the nilbog. We also had a bloodhunter who had been part of a cult and lost his memory, so I gave him some flashbacks from investigating the altar and such. There were a lot of great opportunities for roleplay and they especially enjoyed the fortune telling (even though I rolled two ones and a two). I only had a couple of issues with it and being a new dm, I didn't catch them until they had happened. The first is that the combat encounters are waaaay easy. The first one, two out of four players took their turn before the beetles were dead. The second one they just scared the beetles away. On the last one we got halfway through the second round before the twig blights were dead (I even added an extra one) and Squeeks was unconscious. It could have gone a bit longer but our bloodhunter had the curse of binding which made Squeeks unable to take the Reversal of Fortune reaction. I think the number of twig blights could be doubled if you have even one player with spells that can target multiple creatures, unless they've used up all their spell slots before they get there. The second issue that I had was that the players had no clue that the altar outside the tree had clues to lead to Squeeks. They took the hint with the fire beetle trail and followed it to that location, but they were discussing moving on and continuing to search the woods. They just assumed that there was a creepy cult there and didn't even think to investigate the tree. I tried my best to give them good clues in response to their rolls, but I basically had to metagame with one of them to get them to look at the tree and try the blood. I realized after that I could have had them come across the Aktark goblins who could have given them more direct information, but in the moment (again new DM) I panicked. It would have been nice to have more of a story indication as to why they would follow the beetle trail and that Squeeks had gone through the tree.

This was my first experience DMing and I had 2 first time players in the group as well.  I'm using this group as a tester for when I gather my family to start playing.  They enjoyed it so much and encouraged me to keep all the elements the same for the next time I run it.  I actually start the encounter with all my players as members of the audience.  Before the fortunate ones perform and squeaks has her breakdown, an announcer NPC asks anyone interested in adventuring to meet at a designated location post performance as there is a recruiting agent.  After the party meets and signs a contract with Sildar to head to Neverwinter (leading things into the list mines) they head out in the road and meet Seer Shan pretty early on.  For my next round I've actually expanded the whole idea of the performance to a day long festival in the field ward of Waterdeep complete with games, contests, and concessions to get their feet wet and one booth will be the recruiting booth.  Thanks so much for sparking this beginners imagination and creating a fun first encounter scenario! The YouTube videos were also very helpful!

This is a fun little adventure with lots of opportunity for fun roleplaying and action scenes. A great start to a new campaign with recurring NPC potential or an introduction to DnD for new players!

Enjoyed watching the actual play whilst following through the adventure. Very interesting way to promote an item. Well done on both the written version and the youtube play through.
