The Ranger class is one of the more mechanically neglected classes but is still one of my favorites. I always like seeing the Ranger class getting some love in the form of a new archetype that expands how they can be played. I think the Cartographer is an amazing subclass that I can't wait to play.

I am not sure there is a lot to say much beyond this is a great subclass for the Ranger. In an exploration heavy campaign it would be a necessity! It is solid and balanced and tones down some the heavy warrior-focus that most Ranger subclasses have.

The artwork is excellent and everything is attributed. My only small gripe is that the font is tiny. I imagine it is to ensure that all of the text fits on its one (really 4/5th) page. Yes, one can easily enough enlarge the PDF but one also gets very tired of having to do that.

Definitely an excellent subclass and probably the best non-official one I have come across, for any class. I love it and hope to be able to play one in an exploration-heavy campaign soon. Until then there are always NPCs that could serve a party well during an exploration phase of the campaign.

Thank you so much, Mark! I hope you enjoy the subclass as a player and a DM! Regarding the font—yes, the regular font size for D&D products is quite small. Thank you for the feedback; I'll keep that in mind in the future and think about creating large-text versions that are more accessible.

The short: The Cartographer is now my favorite ranger sub-class.

The long: This subclass is more than just a way to hit different kinds of bad guys a little harder, it's a whole approach to playing an intersting character concept who will inevitably become a tremendous asset to the party and campaign as a whole. As a DM, the Master Map is something I both love and fear, because it both encourages and incentivizes exploration - which means a lot improvising some extended left turns onto the road less travelled just to fill in some blank spaces on the Master Map and add an interesting (or useful) fast travel location. Having a cartographer in my party is now a default hope I have for any campaigns I play it, and I may just have to give up my spellcaster addiction to play one as my next character.

The cartographer specialisation for rangers is the class I've always wanted to play without knowing it. It scales really well with level ups, arguably better than traditional Ranger sub-classes which can end up feeling a little outpaced at higher levels.

Really nice sub-class. It's got a lot of fun RP possibilities and fills a different niche in a party. Plus the formatting and design of the file is top notch.

I've been looking for something to do with a ranger and this fits so perfectly. It is also particularly timely with Saltmarsh just releasing and Avernus on the horizon. Where better to have Mapwalking that the ocean, or Hell.

Cannot wait to start making some homebrew magic items specifically for this archetype.

The layout is beautiful as well.

Thank you so much! I worked really hard on the layout (I wanted to show off as much of Deven's maps as possible), so that means a lot. I hope you enjoy playing it (and feel free to reflavor features for a nautical or infernal cartographer!) and have fun making some cool magic items!

This subclass is exactly what my campaign of a year and a half has been missing. Its focus on exploration is going to seriously impact the way I run travel. Plus, the design is beyond beautiful. I've already recommended it to friends and will continue to do so!

im a huge fan of this subclass. its great to see an exploration focused ranger instead of another damage dealer. ive been wanting to make a charater thats a cartoghraper for quite a while now and this is finaly giving me the insentive to do so. it does also help that it came out on my birthday so im a little bias

I've played a Ranger for the majority of my RPG career, both in D&D and in MMOs. I'm really excited about this new class archetype, because it adds that element of exploration & wonder to a class that can sometimes feel a bit stale. I like how all of the features truly feel like someone working with maps & helping their party know which way to go when out adventuring in the wilds. I can't wait to actually try it out at the table!

1) Absolutely LOVE the look of it. Care was taken on the layout, formatting, the text is super clean and the art is resplendent. 2) This subclass focuses on exploration moreso than any other ranger subclass in the game, so much so that it shirks certain design expectations for ranger subclasses around combat output. You might really like that about it, I'm a fan. 3) The features feel well designed and thought out, I'd love to see a player working on their master map at my table. My only quibble, is that given they don't have a damage increase at 3rd, they probably could have gone even farther on exploration benefits at that level. (EDIT: I noticed the ranger is granted animal messenger before they have spell slots to cast it, seems like a small error, I'd expect it to get fixed soon. In the mean time, I'd suggest granting them entangle in that space. It's thematic, will help close the combat gap, and as druid spell, there's no chance they took it at 2nd level.)

Thank you so much! I like the entangle idea and will definitely consider that. Any thoughts on what additional benefits might be good at 3rd level?

This subclass and the art look absolutely amazing! I am blown away by the maps (as is expected from any Deven Rue map). The subclass fills a hole I've felt like 5e had left for the ranger: a dedicated explorer. I love the flavor and mechanics of the Master Map as it adds so much to solidify how a cartographer's maps are as important to them as a spellbook is to a wizard but can come in just as many shapes and forms.

All of the subclass features resonate well with the theme of the character as well. Wisdom of the Wilds gives the character the tools to be an explorer and chart maps. Arcane Cartography gives early importance to a character's bond with the maps they make, giving them advantages to territories they've mapped beyond just what their favored terrain would do for them. Cartographer's Vision and Hostile Geography are such unique features with so many interesting possibilities for how a party could go about utilizing them. And their capstone skill being a fast travel ability is icing on the cake.

I did have some questions and comments about a couple of things. The first is the ranger level 3 spell for the subclass being animal messenger, which is a 2nd level spell, so the ranger wouldn't be able to cast it when it receives the spell. The only other thing I'm a little concerned about is that the cartographer doesn't have any combat enhancing features at 3rd level, which does make the subclass feel a bit underpowered compared to other ranger subclasses in fights until it gets Hostile Geography at 11th level.

I absolutely love the feel of the subclass and am interested to try playing a cartographer and/or running a game with one in the near future so I can give more feedback. Thank you so much for the subclass and I look forward to seeing any future works!

Thank you so much, Dylan! I'm so glad you like the flavor, especially that of the Master Map. You are absolutely right about animal messenger being a 2nd level spell! Thank you for catching that, and I'll correct it soon in a future version. I also agree that the Cartographer is underpowered in combat—it's intentionally focused on exploration and utility, and a Cartographer character would have to take some combat-focused spells if they wanted more effectiveness in fights, but please let me know how playing it goes so we can take that into account!
