I wish that I could date Hamund, he seems so worldly.

These guides are great as they add so much to the world and are really detailed.

My players love to try and loot and collection everything they can possibly find so these books give me a great answers and reference guides.

A really good book that adds a lot of depth to crafting and magic items, the only thing holding it back is the presence of editing mistakes (eg mispelled words, sections that seem to have been erroneously copy/pasted).

A thorough, logical and lovingly developed guide to really expand the game. It adds flavor and morality to both in-campaign and between campaign life for your players. The one addition I made for our table was a CR based XP table to go along with it.

The only thing I wish there was in addition was a Foundry/Forge/roll20 module so that I didn't have to create every harvestable and item by hand. Well worth it for what it brings to the game!

If you're looking for survival rules, this is far more of a "Monster Hunter" style thing. It's not going to tell you how much meat you got after killing a tarrasque, but it will absolutely tell you what kind of weapons and armor you can craft from its hide, what abilties those items have, and the like. Even weaker monsters sometimes have materials that can simply be sold for money. It even gives ways to craft DMG items using certain monster parts, like using spines to make +1 arrows.

I would advise only including these rules if you want the game to focus around this kind of elbow-deep hunting and crafting. If your players want to wander the wilds and hunt monsters Witcher-style, then these rules make your life a lot easier.

Also, keep in mind that this book only covers the Monster Manual; Volume 2 covers Volo's Guide to Monsters and Volume 3 covers Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes. The main disadvantage of this book is that you're kind of restricted to using the official material unless you want to come up with loot tables for all homebrew monsters you want to use. But that's a "suffering from success" problem, and reflavoring things is part of D&D.

I have implimented this and the other two volumes in my game and I am loving it. There was a small ramp up of understanding to my players but they seem to enjoy it, especially if I give them a quest.

So, I picked this up a little while back, and my GM asked for a look-see when I told him about it. A few weeks later, he started freestyle worldbuilding a megadungeon that produced its own monsters because of a Major Cosmic Evil(tm) that had been sealed within, and a city around it whose economy was largely based on... the use of monster parts harvested within!

We accidentally bullied him into running a campaign there, and I'm going to be in charge of the loot tables when it starts. Session Zero should be in a few weeks, when the college kids among us are done with finals. The three of us have our characters done - Aberrant Mind Sorcerer, Arcane Trickster Rogue, and Battle Master Fighter, all starting at level one with the Heroic statblock - and we're extremely excited to be using the book and playing this game.

I dunno if I'll be able to edit this with updates on the campaign, but I'm excited! To review the actual product for everyone wanting concrete details and not simple joy - the tables are simple and easy to follow with a dedicated fluff section detailing what any given part is and what it's used for, and humanoid creatures deliberately have a short parts table supplemented with a more traditional loot table, in case your players hack up bandits instead of leaving the corpses in peace. The rules for appraisal and actual harvesting are simple and intuitive, with parts being assigned a DC to reach per creature type (say, parts at DC 10, 15, and 20 for any given harvesting roll) rather than having to aim for specific parts in different checks, each with an attached value on sale and listing any potential uses. Not all items are unique to this book - several are instead found in official materials, with only rules for how to craft them; I consider this to be a good thing, because let's be honest, your players are absolutely going to ask to craft basic arrows at some point, if they're the sorts looking to craft at all.

Altogether, this book is simple and intuitive to use, doesn't overstay its welcome, and does exactly what it tells you it will. I'm planning to get the follow-ups at some point in the future if we ever start eyeing creatures outside the MM.

Throughout 20+ years of DMing and three editions of the game, I've had players who wanted to make trophies, potions, and magic items from the carcasses of supernatural creatures they've vanquished, and I've always had to BS my way through it. Hamund's Harvesting Handbook is a comprehensive system that satisfies your waste-not-want-not, Witcher-emulating players. It has the following:

  1. A system for assessing & harvesting creatures, with different skills required for different creature types & rules for decomposition of corpses
  2. Extensive tables for every creature in the Monster Manual, specifying exactly what can be harvested from each creature, the GP weight and DC for said harvestables, and what they can be crated into. It also accounts for things like "Devils don't leave behind corpses" and "elementals don't really have bodies,"
  3. A bunch of new items all ready to be made from bits and pieces of monsters, all well balanced, with actual crafting rules for making them (beyond Xanathar's Guide's rules).

With a little study this sytem will fit right in to your campaign. Bear in mind that this will let your characters get a little more gold value from their kills by harvesting valuable components, but the gold values aren't excessive and when they're measurable, it's for creatures like dragons, who should be worthy prizes.

Definitely recommended, I can't wait to pick up the other books in this series.

This book is GREAT it could make the difference from just killing and/or running, and an extra element. It doesn't change the balance when you still consider the amount of costs in time and coin to create magical items. I like to have this at hand at the game to tell the harvesting players what they are able to fetch from the monster. To the creator: Please consider POD!

This is absolutely amazing, all my players love being able to loot everything they kill (and I mean everything). A great overview over what each part can be used for as well is so great! I've essentially made it the guidebook for the Hunting guild in my campaign. Definitely get this for your own campaigns!

These books (yes, I purchased all 3) are an excellent resource. Mechanics for harvesting, harvestable materials (for EVERY monster in MM, MToF, and VGtM) and their value, craftable items, player character options, NPCS and collection quests! This is a great option to expand any campaign.

A brilliant suppliment to any game, too often before i found this amazing book would a player ask to loot the body and i would stubble and stuggle to come up with loot on the fly, no more! i recomend this too all Dms and Players that want to add more accurate and useful loot to their monsters and game.
