Reflectionist Class

An interesting class, which grants you a "reflection" of yourself that you can summon for aid. There are four subclasses for different types of reflections - a demonic reflection, a ghostly reflection, an angelic reflection, and a generic reflection of your emotions - and each gets both an array of unique powers as well as access to a selection of general powers (with the emotional reflection largely defined by such chosen powers).

The class rules generally seem solid, although a d10 Hit Die seems high for a class without some kind of assumed combat training. A few of the subclass-specific abilities fueled by reflection points also seem overly complicated. Worth noting is that the pick-your-own abilities remind one of the warlock class - and as suggested in another review, perhaps this would have worked better as a warlock subclass than as its own class.

While the reflectionist is well-written overall, I have trouble buying into the default lore, where the reflection is somehow created by a transformational moment in the character's life. (This isn't helped by the fourth subclass, which is very vaguely defined in general.) I think the reflectionist would be easier to accept if it was instead some kind of entity mystically bonded to your character. Either way, the high concept is a major downside of the class - it doesn't fit easily into a traditional D&D campaign, and requires you to make some special space for it in your world.

One other minus is the $4.99 price tag, which is a little much for a single class. If you're going to buy this, wait for a sale or bundle.

All in all, if you're willing to accept the unusual class concept (or reskin it for your own purposes), this could be an interesting addition to a special kind of D&D campaign.

I LOVE the reflectionist! I will introduce it as an option in my new campaign in the land of terror and despair of Barovia. I really think it fits perfctly this kind of misterious, dark setting. I think the class has been well playtested and seems fairly balanced. If some of my players will choose it, I will write further impressions about it as the campaign develops and I have a chance to see it in full action!

A very unique, creative, and well-balanced class. It's well-written, well-formatted, and very different in both mechanics and flavor from the other 5e classes.

One minor nitpick I have is that the Reflectionist's powers come from a rather vague and esoteric source (essentially they had some life-changing experience that led to them seeing themselves and/or the entire world from a different perspective, which has "left an indelible mark on your mind, and the remnants of this realization allow you to draw on energy beyond your reality"). This may make them feel somewhat ill-fitting among the more standard fantasy archetypes that make up the other classes in 5e.

Aside from that very minor nitpick, it's an excellent class that I recommend wholeheartedly.

Firstly, I want to state that I VERY rarely think a "full" class is ever needed. That's what archetypes are for. There's no reason this couldn't have been a very well crafted archetype for Warlock (mirror patron) or Wizard (a specialized illusionist) or even Bard or Sorcerer (using Inspiration or Sorcererous points for reflection points). It would, of course, be a smaller set of abilities but I think a small focused archetype is better than even the most well intentioned full class. I also think the Wisdom AND Constitution saving throw proficiencies were a bad choice, with both of those being the most useful of the saving throws where every other class gets a "good" and "bad" save. I also think summoning the reflection at the first level and front-loaded nature of the class makes it way too easy to take as a dip.

That being said, the class isn't bad in the Wizards of the Coast definition of "Over Powered". To WOTC, a class is OP if it takes fun away from any other player at the table (DM included) and I don't think this qualifies for that definition. If you were allowing this at your table, it would probably be a very interesting character to have playing. A half-caster that also is a decent combatant, the Reflectionist allows the player to summon a mirror duplicate which will be used with a variety of the abilities possesed by the reflectionist. The archetypes are all unique, with no overlap so if you're not worried about optimizers in your group, give the class a whirl. It will very very likely end up being fun!

I'll judge the class and award it stars based on what it is, not what it isn't. I'm going to give it a 4/5, taking one point away because of the front-loaded nature combined with the two awesome saving throws. If it was one or the other, it wouldn't be a big deal but both together is just a little too far against WOTC design for my tastes.

I think this is a very imagnative and unique class that provides something new to D&D. My only criticism is that the game is open to abuse by power gamers, as players can potentially have proficiency in the three most common saving throws if they choose the right subclass. Minor balance issues aside, I think this allows for an excellent opportunity for great roleplaying.

In later revisions the class feature that granted a third saving throw proficiency was removed in favor of mechanics that enhance the class thematically.

First up - this review was written before actually trying out the class in play, so may be updated at a later date.

It's rare to find a new class that actually adds something unique - but also desirable - to the game. The Reflectionist does, and pulls it off pretty well.

The core concept of the Reflectionist is really strong, and does a great job of differentiating it. In practice that means it has a new playstyle, and a nice range of abilities without treading on the toes of any other class. The subclasses flow logically from the main concept, and make sense. None are obviously better or worse than the other (though the last option will require some planning and a strong character concept to make best use of).

Between the core abilities and the expanded, optional ones, it's easy to draw comparisons with Warlocks, and it does look as though the Reflectionist would match them for versatility.

I'm highly excited to try out this class and see how it actually plays!

Outstanding work from two relatively new authors! Brave attempt at developing a new class. The best thing about it is the in-depth story rationale for its construction as a unique class, instead of as a subclass. This is usually pretty rare.

There are definitely aspects that can be tweaked for balance. For example, I wouldn't grant a new class proficiency in two common saving throws (CON and WIS). I'd pick one of them and pair it with an ability like either STR, INT, or CHA. In addition, the wording of particular phrases could be made more consistent with the wordings from the PHB, at least when explaining a rule. Patches of this I'm sure will be corrected in future iterations.

I encourage everyone to give this a purchase and provide some constructive feedback to the authors, who have clearly taken their work here seriously.
