This is a terrific little adventure that fits seamlessly into Dragon Heist. The writing is excellent and its structured in a delightfully open-ended manner that invites player ingenuity and DM improvisation. It sets itself up with a difficult task: inserting an episode of horror in an adventure that is largely light-hearted and silly. Many writers couldn't make this work, but this supplement handles it very well indeed, in part through the clever conceit of staging the bulk of the action at a fancy party. (This makes the supplement play best with the Cassalanter storyline, in my opinion, but I could be biased since that's the one I ran.) Overall, this adds a lot of flavor to Waterdeep and contains some cool connections to Curse of Strahd. Definitely recommended.

I was really interested with this story for the theme and the mystery aspect. I was planning on adding it to my Waterdeep campaign. The problem for me is that I haven't played or DMed Curse of Strahd and it seems like this information is something this product assumes you have.

I think this is fine for people familiar with Barovia/vampire lore in D&D but for someone who doesn't know this stuff the sudden end of the material really left me with a lot of guestions and no answers or clues as how to continue the story with my PCs. The material gives no suggestions as to how to resolve the Vampire plot or how to deal with the NPCs with her. It says the vampire is a 'good' character but I don't know what that means, the vampires bite attack doesn't seem to be deadly, so I assume she would be able to feed without killing people, if they are not 'peasants' with 4HP), so I'm assuming the PCs could help her get free of the clutches of her 'keepers', but that wouldn't help the neighborhood that's negatively affected by her precense.

All in all, it's a great set-up for a DM who has ideas for a vampire themes quests/adventures for their party. I as a new DM with no knowledge of Curse of Strahd was left wanting more guidance. I wish the product information would have been a bit more clear about the fact that it's not really a beginning-middle-end type of story/adventure, but more of a set-up for DM generated content

Thank you very much for your review! I will look to adding in a bit of clarification, perhaps a second document that serves as a lore primer. Having said that, The Lady of Trollskull Priory is very much designed to be an expansion to Dragon Heist, simply introducing a new resident to Trollskull Alley who comes with some...baggage. How this is resolved is left open ended quite deliberately. The hope is the players will determine what they feel is the best course of action. Do they slay the lady, regardless of the fact that she is, essentially, a good person in a bad situation? Do they seek to protect her and teach her to feed humanely? How does this play out with the other residents of the Alley and of Waterdeep? These are all left open ended for each table to explore to their own tastes, and all takes on it are valid. Thank you! Travis

I think that this was a great setup and awesome gothic addition to Waterdeep. The descriptions of the characters and the Priory really got my players into the theme. I like how there were additional details about the various tropes and ideas on how to take these characters even further in the campaign.

I only gave it four stars though because I see this as more of a setup to future adventures, rather than an adventure in itself. I feel as if my players were constantly looking around the party for the next plot thread to drop, when it really is a question of "Who is the Lady" and how does the party react to her "condition".

Thanks so very much for your review! I am thrilled to hear that your players enjoyed their time with the Lady! The resources here are definitely designed with an eye towards making the Lady an ongoing element in a Waterdeep centered campaign (specifically Dragon atheist) so I can see the lack of a traditional “adventure” being a bit of a dissonance for some folks. I do think you can run the materials here as a straightforward “go kill the monster” tale, but that was not the design intent. Thanks, Travis

Gothic is sometimes a hard theme to play on with D&D. After all, we're essentially pulp heroes in a world of often black and white morality (although we all know the best adventures are where that isn't true). This adventure pulls off the gothic feel perfectly, and is a fantastic adventure to boot.

However, I knocked a star off because there was some editing mistakes and some very powerful magic items for the party level. But overall I don't feel either of these things detract from the meat of the adventure and highly recommend running it in your own games!

The City of Splendors gets a bit darker with Travis Legge's wonderfully gothic The Lady of Trollskull Priory. Without giving too much away, Travis brings a taste of Barovia to Waterdeep, and plants it right down in your PCs neighborhood, setting up a dark and twisted scenario who's short or long term resolution will vary immensely from table to table.

Adding a series of engaging events and a group of intriguing, sympathetic NPCs to Trollskull Alley, this supplement provides a brilliant new layer to the Waterdeep Dragon Heist campaign.

The Lady of Trollskull Priory is a nice thing to have in the pocket of any DM who wants to run Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, especially those who wish to add elements related to gothic horror to their games. It consists of three encounter-like “episodes” that can occur at different times. It also has a mini ‘dungeon’ with a working map as well as handouts, and advice for running the adventure with regards to different elements of play. Something I really liked is how it incorporated different elements of Ravenloft lore into the adventure’s background, giving DMs who are running tables that have gone through the Curse of Strahd adventure to see the bleed-over effects of what has happened there.

All-in-all, it’s a great distraction for the players from the central plot of Dragon Heist that is perfect for a Halloween episode, and easy to integrate to almost any point in the adventure. What I would have liked to see, however, is the adventure being less sanitized to avoid perceived offenses; vampires have an inherent darkness about them. They are monsters. From this perspective, I don’t think it’s wrong to have vampires be predatory as other monsters are. That’s what makes them scary, and I feel like there is a missed opportunity for more darkness in that sense. Additionally, I wish there were more tie-ins to the rest of Dragon Heist.

Definitely worth it if you’re looking for an extra something for your Dragon Heist campaign.

Thanks so very much for the thoughtful and detailed review! It was a lot of fun to play with Ravenloft easter eggs while writing this. With regards to the sanitization, the aim of the story is to explore human monstrosity. The true villain off the story as constructed is not the vampire, but the humans around her. Having said that, if you prefer to have the vampire go full out Kiefer Sutherland in Lost Boys, I think this material could be used for such a story. As far as tying into other parts of Dragon Heist, I really wanted to build something that focused on Trollskull Alley because I think it is such an amazing element. Perhaps I'll put together a follow-up to this that develops the idea of the characters introduced herein acting as a substitute Big Bad. Thank you so much! Travis

Both the format of this adventure and the story itself are clever and exciting! My own players are going to love it. The modular nature of the encounters/episodes makes it easy to drop them into another story arc.

Well done, Travis!
