Fun, with issues.

The Good:

  • Some pretty evocative locales, really brings the players into the scene
  • A good twist at the end

The Bad:

  • Significant combat balance issues, the balancing scaling does not work at all if the APL is significantly different from the suggested level. My players were level 1's and half the party died because opponent damage was designed to quickly put down 3rd level characters and did not scale.
  • There is no cohesiveness in the plot mechanics between the scenes. In fact, you could entirely skip half the scenario and go straight for the latter half because they have no mechanical tie-ins to each other. 4 hour scenario easily can be 2.

This is an excellent, well written module. It fits well in a 4 hour slot, the characters are interesting and give a DM room for role play (or not, if you're not into that), and there is a variety to the combat. I really enjoyed the four different possible outcomes for the end. There are clues that point towards getting the best ending and it's really up to the players to solve it.

If you're running this module, the only change I recommend is removing all references to the temple before talking to the NPCs. My players didn't see a reason to talk to the NPCs when they knew that the missing NPC was last seen at the temple.
