Useful as a side adventure in a campaign where a desert is present. It also introduces several great NPCs for use in a campaign whether as an ally or enemy of the party. The final encounter feels challenging and threatning even against a slightly above the curve player party.

I just finished running this adventure for my group and we had a (sand) blast!

A great mixture of puzzle, combat and roleplaying opportunities in a tight package.

The highlight was a cool room with three spirits that the players have to decide who to side with, after the spirits have given their back stories. Tied my players in moral knots and encouraged some roleplaying too, which can be a bit of a rarity with this particular group of players - kudos for that alone!

The combats were well balanced, challenging the players just enough - all players were in single digit hp by the end of the climactic encounter - whilst introducing some interesting lair and legendary actions to increase the options available to the main villain.

The adventure is thematic and resonant from an Egyptian tomb adventure perspective, taking inspiration from well-known media whilst bringing its own style and ideas to the party.

If I had any suggestions for improvement, it would be to expand the personality of the dragon at the beginning of the adventure, and outline possible answers to PC questions and demands, especially for newbie DMs who might need some advice in this area. But that's a nitpick in what is an excellent piece of work.

Highly recommended.

This adventure is solid, sweet and short. Pros:

  • Able to be run in one 3-4 hour session (if DM prepares well).
  • Helpful encounter scaling for stronger or weaker parties
  • A nice mix of puzzle, roleplay and combat in this dungeon
  • Atmospheric desert tomb setting
  • Useful map, which is easy to draw in Roll20
  • Hooks to continue the adventure afterwards!

Cons:

  • Lots of typos
  • Lots of magic items given to the party beforehand will make this almost too easy (my players walked all over the BBEG, and then they took on Alaethryia and her three young blue dragon kins and came out alive). Perhaps the encounter could have been scaled more difficult for my party of four 8th level characters. EDIT: I forgot BBEG's counterspell. Could be a huge reason why the magic users trumped him.

Overall, I really enjoyed being DM for this adventure. I highly recommend it to others. My players seemed to have fun.

Another excellent adventure from the author. I ran this adventure in two sessions for a party of four and then five level six characters. Rising Sands was incredibly fun for the players and for me to run.

The adventure text is laid out extremely well. It's easy to follow and the DM will know exactly what happens next. I definitely appreciate notes on adjusting the difficulty of encounters. The best part of each encounter are the tactical suggestions. They have lots of great ideas on how to really turn the screws on the player. That said, it's a challenging adventure but never unfair. It's awesome to be able to find a module like this with RP challenges and puzzles. The players are already wondering what the implications of their choices may be. When if came to the final battle, the party was equally nervous and excited. They felt like they got out by the skin of the teeth.

Needless to say, the Defiler will be back in my campaign - he's a delightfully wicked and clever adversary that deserves another chance at murdering the party. In all, this was a coherent, massively fun adventure. I will be eagerly waiting the next adventure by this author.

I ran this module for a YouTube channel that I DM and my players all agreed that this was the most enjoyable one-shot experience they have had so far. It is streamlined very well and is easy to drop in to any campaign even if you're not in a desert setting (we were on the road). The puzzles/roleplaying in this module are top notch and the boss fight is fantastic (especially if you remember to stick to the module, I forgot a bunch of stuff :( )

If you want to check out how me and my players did, you can find the video here (note, we had to scrap some to make it fit into our timeframes that we aim for): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5MVcs6IMpo

Thank you for the kind words, Adam! It was an honor to be featured on One-Shot Onslaught, even if Khafar did have a little less bite. :) My goal was to present a tried and true dungeon crawl experience, but not just fill it with traps and roaming monsters. I am glad to hear your table enjoyed the puzzle and RP elements.

Great little adventure. Has an epic feel to it. The rp with my party and the three npc's was amazing. Some of the most intense rp I've ever had in a game

Thank you! My goal with the Shackled Souls encounter was to present a series of choices where nothing felt like the "right" answer. I'm glad to hear it created a memorable scene.

Rising Sands is a well constructed and challenging adventure, designed to be used in any setting with a desert region. The adventure is written with 7th level characters in mind, but has gudelines for scaling the difficulty up or down. The traps, puzzles and antagonists are interesting and compelling, with a few new creatures included in the bestiary. There is also an immersive puzle designed for the players to solve at the table which promises to be great fun, if a little challenging.

The story's antagonist, the Defiler, is a delightful adversary, worthy of becoming a repeat villain or threatening presence looming throughout a campaign. Pick up Rising Sands and enjoy your desert adventure!

Thank you for your interest in my adventure. My goal as a designer was to present a fairly linear dungeon but spin certain tropes, such as the puzzle, enough to make it more memorable than "kick door, kill monster, loot room." Thanks again!
