SLIGHT SPOILERS

I think a solid creative idea is here. The idea sets a sinister and truly evil villain for this encounter I have ran this with my group, but there is some careful prep that is needed for anyone who wishes to do so. Including:

  • Creating a city map (not included, though mentioned)
  • Creation and lore of a major plot item (although mentioned of stats and lore located, not existant in module)
  • Piecing together context clues due to lack of clarity (BBEGs is wizard and old king, but DM's don't read the wizard is Methrazotl until the final room? Is Corvus working with him or another enemy? Motivations of these characters are not very clear either)
  • Developing reasons to visit points of interest (why would I go to the graveyard? What's the point of the Tower of Eiden if the characters can't visit it without creating the location? In the hall of Kings, where does the teleportation apparatus take you to descend deeper?)
  • Arbitrary rules (Final fight teleportation, where do they teleport to? And when they do, how does that allow for balance if they didn't visit the rooms they teleport to? Purpose of having the wraith's spirit bound under the Elder Brain but then not revealed to players in some way)

I was disappointed with the lack of connection between points and disorganized thoughts, which can be easily forgiven or looked over. However, the author has not updated anything since its release, even when approached about other issues.

TL;DR Good idea, poorly put together. Quite a bit of prep work is needed to have this run smoothly.

Am about to start running this adventure with my group and am pretty excited about it. The only issue I see is that a player handout of the city is claimed to be in the appendix section of this adventure but no such map exisits. Not a problem as it isnt really necessary but just made it feel like this was incomplete. Still excited none the less.

Looks pretty good for a spooky adventure in an abandoned city, but the city map mentioned on page 4 is currently not included with the file.

Thank you for reviewing King to an Empty City! The city map was intentionally not included in the product, because other than offering an easy way to navigate through specific landmarks, it serves no gameplay purpose. I will consider adding it since you mentioned it.

King to an Empty City has a very cool and creepy premise. A DM of any experience level should have no problem pulling a solid horror experience from the material. The NPCs presented herein are interesting, developed, and clearly motivated. The included maps are simple, but solid, providing excellent utility for DMs and players.

The latest update of the product addressed most of the editing issues I described in my earlier review, but the magic item "Life Drain" is still missing a recharge condition.

Having said that, as this stands it is a very good story. It is well worth the cover price.

The best thing about this adventure is that it's pretty uncomplicated - which is great for new DMs and players. This adventure contains 2 monsters that are pretty neat, well thought out gameplay with the unique inclusion of a short and a long version and the action is excitingly clear-cut. The maps and layout, much like the module itself, favor function over form. The print-friendly version is a nice added bonus. I'm definitely looking forward to more adventures from this author - he gets it right the first time!

I recommend this adventure.

It's always nice to see works of new authors. King to an empty city offers 2 great monster, excellent gameplay and straight forward action. It's nice that offers shorter and longer adventures. Very promising start for this new author.
