Ran this for 5 level-4 adventurers, to give our regular GM a break from his ToA campaign. Overall it was a lot of fun, even though it took almost 6 hours! (Playing on Roll20 to be fair.)
Logistically, I had a little trouble with game balance. The party wrecked three swarms of lovebugs in the beginning: no PC was affected, and only one NPC got bitten during the fight. So then I really pumped it up for the remaining fights, and dealing with the queen at the end was a slog.
Since we hadn't had to deal with the charm effect from the lovebug bites until the boss fight, I didn't really realize how annoying it could get. The target still had to make a save to shake off the effect; damage alone wasn't enough. So the rather un-wise half-orc fighter was charmed for half the final fight, getting beaten up by her comrades trying to snap her out of it. Not really fun for anyone. I ended up needing to employ some on-the-fly house-rules.
The investigation was also tough for me. Players didn't know what to do, and I felt like I was railroading them. This was my first GMing attempt though, so maybe someone who thinks on their feet would have been able to handle it better. I do kind of wish the mod had more clearly outlined strategies for handling the investigation (both in the market and in Tyriki anchorage).
Oh, and of course the party stormed the sorceress' house and killed the incubus before he could get in a word about his scheme. So much for my fancy dialogue! (And they weren't even going to search the house! Buzz Buzz found the diary!)
Speaking of, it was very hard to make Buzz-Buzz likeable (and this party even has a kenku). I knew the group would not be cool with him continuing to pursue Aello when she had outright turned him down, so I changed it to imply she actually DID like him back, but was too practical to consider a date. It made us all feel a little less skeevy!
Overall, despite some frustrations, this module was totally worth it! I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a fun Valentine's one-shot or a way to take a break during a ToA campaign!
