Good mix of investigation, roleplay and combat. Combat can be very deadly but the players I've played with loved the challenge.

Old Enemies Arise is a challenging Tier 2 adventure. Set around Mulmaster post devastation, you can interact with new enemies, and realize that not all friends are friendly. Some of the game aspects/spell effects can cause torment at the table (my players strenuously protested the use of one such effect). I should have spent more time adjusting the spell lists for the opponents though, as there is not a lot of long range spell casting available. I greatly enjoyed playing the opponents, as they were creatures I had not played before. Some opportunity for role play, but this is mainly a combat Tier 2.

This is the weakest of the modules in this series, but players still had a good time with the exploration and combat. It's a necessary introduction to Rise of the Ogre King, and it provides some interesting challenges, so it's still worth running.

PRO

  • The locked/unlocked check mechanics in the investigation was an interesting way to stagger the information players could obtain.
  • Most players hadn't encountered Guards and Wards before, and it provided interesting mechanics for the encounter in part 5.

CON

  • Having modified stat blocks in the appendix, rather than standard stat blocks in the appendix and modifications described in running text, would be helpful.

This introduced the whole "Mulmaster being re-built by undead" situation, which blew me away. It's such an evil place! And the ethical choices at the end were something I hadn't seen before. Having played it and DM'd it, however, there are some plot problems you'll have to work through. The approach to the camp, with all the traps, seemed pointless because a small number of bad guys were waiting in the mostly empty camp. The final fight is a tactially well planned to challenge the party so make sure you read what they are going to do. A good mod, 4 stars.

A very well written adventure with encounters that could work well as combat or RP. I definitely learned some interesting things about Damaran and Reshemen in this adventure. The only thing I would change is the overlook into the Reshemi witches' campsite and the campsite itself being separate sections of the adventure. When I ran it, I combined these two sections into one encounter, with traps included on the hillside for any PCs that decided to charge into the camp. :D

I really appreciate the attention to detail in this adventure. You can tell it was lovingly crafted. The story is well written, the combats are challenging and interesting, and there are lots of notes to help the DM make the adventure run smoothly. I don't really have any specific feedback except that I liked it and would happily recommend it, especially for those who are interested in the lore of the Forgotten Realms and/or enjoy challenging combats.

I'm glad you enjoyed the adventure. Thank you for the kind words. I really did try to bring the lore of the Rashemi to AL with this mod.

Rashemen is one of those under used but unique countries in the Forgotten Realms, so it was a pleasure to visit the Hathrans once again. The module has a simple plot that feels complex. That is it is easy to run and yet feels to the players to be complex.

What it offers the opportunity for some complex and specific tacits from the NPCs and so the DM has to spend more time preparing for the battles than for the plot.

Because of the way the level adjustments are written (Spell caster classes and spell lists are changed between weak, average, strong etc) it becomes hard to prepare the tactics thoroughly and I found myself looking up spell descriptions during play.

A great peek behind the political curtain that surrounds Thay and her enemies. Engaging story, innovative mechanics for unlocking skill checks, and difficult choices with real consequences for the players. It's set in familiar surroundings (Mulmaster) so its easy to integrate into an ongoing campaign while also allowing PC's to visit strange lands with unknown customs. This module will not disappoint. I'm eagerly looking forward to the next chapter in this story.

I've enjoyed this mod on both sides of the screen, and thought that it carried a really solid balance of exploration, diplomacy, and combat - all while engaging me and the players with some previously untread (by us) areas and lore.

I'm excited to see where this one goes!

Solid story with a lot of opportunities for the characters to make impactful decisions. This mod also includes a fair bit of relevant detail about a political power that may be new to a lot of folks. My favorite bit, though, is that everything in this adventure made sense to me. There are OTHER mods where one thing or another feels forced or artificial, but this all flowed quite naturally from the antagonists' motivations, resources, and talents. I'm looking forward to futher installments in this story line.

Old Enemies Arise touches on the history, politics, and culture of the Realms in a way that the 5e era has been sorely lacking. Long time players will appeciate the chance to participate in a classic rivalry, and new players will get a look into wider culture and conflicts that published 5e adventures have previously ignored.

The adventure itself is a good mix of investigation, role-playing, and combat. The characters will need to piece togther who is doing what to whom as they navigate a set of combat encounters that is significantly more challenging that typical adventure league faire. As the situation comes into focus, they will have decisions to make about who to support and who to oppose.

The author cares about the production values of the mod, and it shows. The maps are several grades about the usual AL maps. Clear, easy to read, and in color with both DM and player versions. A player handout provides a break down on the critical lore for the mod, and illustrations for the major NPCs are provided.

Old Enemies Arise is an entertaining mod, the will appeal to both combat munchkins and lore and story purists.

Anything that brings in all the cool lore from the Witches of Rashemen in previous editions is A-OK in my book. A few weird formatting and language issues in places, but nothing that would hurt at the table. Really pleased to have purchased this.

A GREAT Mod.

When I find a mod which is a mix of lore, roleplay and fun tactical combat, with some fun challenges added in, I buy it. This mod is easy to like because it combines the best of those options. It further expands the world of the Moonsea by bringing in opposition to the Red Wizards of Thay, as other local powers are none too happy to see the forces of a Lich-Kingdom making inroads in what is still the largest city of the Moonsea.

This mod can be a bit tough on parties who are not unified or prepared, so be ready to watch your players scramble if they think it is going to be a walkthrough.
