I wasn't ever sure that I was going to have any players use this in any of my games or campaigns. Seems like players love homebrew campaigns but not necessarily player options. Personally I love having more options to pick from and one time I was running Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, I had the opportunity to playtest it myself. In that adventure, there is an undead NPC that can be friendly to the party in Trollskull Alley. The party liked his roleplay so much that when they eventually decided to go after the gold later in the adventure they decided to bring him along too. The Lingering Soul Class was the perfect option that I had in my arsenal to build out an undead NPC that could accompany the party on their adventure. I would highly recommend this product!

I only playtested the Poltergeist subclass and up to level 5 so I can't speak to the other aspects of the class:

Ghostly Form might as well as be a race built into a class based on all the details incorporated into this one feature but it is designed well. Consume enchantment is an interesting ability built for PCs that really love their magic item build and don't want to give it up even after death. Possession is an wordy ability that works on allies and enemies alike. I can see the argument to be made for it being a Level 1 ability as well as its current place as a Level 2. Tbh, most players who would use this subclass I would highly doubt are Level 1 adventurers so it doesn't matter either way. Pervade the Fallen is similar to Possession but you possess a dead body of a creature. I feel like allowing this to be used any number of times during the adventuring day combined with the taking half damage dealt to the corpse (1 HP) makes this trait less useful and/or viable. I would at least provide the corpse with:

Hit Points = Proficiency Bonus x 1d6 (hit die)

Unseen Passenger is a fantastic upgrade to the Possession trait against enemies. Any time you upgrade an existing trait as you level up adds to the thematic and mechanical aspects of the class. Xenoglossia seems underpowered for a Level 9 ability. It is a good ability but it should happen earlier on but it also should have a certain number of uses per day. This is ability is like having counterspell at will. The counterspell spell typically can be picked up at Level 5 as a Level 3 spell. Piercing Chill ought to be the Level 9 ability but it should happen earlier on but it also should have a certain number of uses per day. Being able to put disadvantage on enemies at will is strong.

The various subclass traits are all very well designed to simulate the various NPC spirits/ghosts that these PCs represent. If you are acting like a traditional ghost Poltergeist is the class for you. If you want to be more attack heavy then go Wraith. If you want to be more support/healer similar to the spell's whose name the subclass comes from, Spirit Guardians should be your choice.

A solid option that seems to fit in well with 5e and its power levels. Not perfect (some edge cases and rules specificity are a little vaguer than they might be), but easy enough to apply some common sense or simply make a decision when those edge cases come up.

If you're looking for a post-death ghost class, and you're happy to make some DM decisions where those small gaps exist, you'll get great use out of this class.

This brings back a ton of memories of third edition's Ghostwalk setting, which was a particular favorite of mine. It's a solid option for keeping beloved characters from leaving the story, and I highly recommend checking it out!

Matthew Mercer can do no wrong. With the success of his Critical Role Campaign on Geek & Sundry anything he publishes on the DM's Guild has an ongoing example of his fabulous work.

The Lingering Soul option reminds me of the 3rd ed Ghostwalk Supplement where death wasn't the end of your character. Having the option to continue playing your character after death is great.

Who doesn't want to play any character type or campaign element Mercer designs and can be seen in action on the weekly podcast of his D&D games.

This is another well thought out and well written Optional Class by Mercer.

Highly recommend purchasing this.

The Lingering Soul is a certified DM's Guild Masterpiece by the Going Last Tabletop Gaming Podcast!

D&D has changed dramatically since 1st Edition. What was once a quest to see how long your character could last against a meatgrinder like Tomb of Horrors has become a place where players build a family of bright, interconnected characters with lovable quirks and taglines who may or may not wish to test themselves in a meatgrinder like Tomb of Horrors. What happens in a game where character death is a common outcome when players no longer want their characters to die?

It is no surprise to me that the answer came with the most popular streaming experience D&D has ever seen. Author Matther Mercer, Dungeon Master for Critical Role, has created a platform that elevates D&D characters to the level of serial TV, where death only happens when it makes the most sense to the story.

The Lingering Soul is a brilliant compromise between these two types of D&D, as well as an incredible look at playing a ghost. This PC class represents a powerful spirit who haunts an object or party member. As the Lingering Soul gains levels, they learn how to possess opponents or even fallen enemies to gain corporeal form, giving them a mountain of options over how to affect and interact with the world.

Finally, Mercer provides three archetypes each drawn from the best kinds of ghost stories. The angry Poltergeist gains the ability to manipulate physical objects, wielding weapons even in ghost form. The Wraith delves into undeath, with wicked claws dealing necrotic damage and plenty of core undead qualities. Finally, the Spirit Guardian focuses on the more divine spirit form, gaining the ability to smite and heal and otherwise feel like a powerful version of the cleric's spell.

The Lingering Soul gives plenty of options for the recently deceased PC, allowing them to swap their old character levels for new ones and remain a powerful member of their party. Will the PC eventually hope to be ressurected? Will they remain in ghost form for the remainder of the campaign? Whichever way they choose, Mercer has provided an excellent new rule set to help deal with the frustrating transition of character death.

I just played a poltergeist in one of my party's last sessions all in all a very fun experience. But it became very difficult due to the fact that I could not interact with items. But that is a big part of the class being a lingering soul so it was an adjustment I enjoyed the ability to throw the weapons around and going through walls was extremely useful. It may have just been our party dynamic that made it more difficult for me in the specific case of that session but all in all it is very fun. Were my party built better to be able to accomadate a lingering soul it would have worked better but I think it is very well done and very enjoyable.

This is an awesome and excellently designed class overall. It is unlikely to break any game balance in combat, and its utility features are rather limited for most cases. But a clever player can still find a purpose in most any scenario.

It's presumed inability to multiclass is somewhat disappointing, however. Particularly for casters I would find it rather annoying to lose access to my spells. Bit nitpicky, but figured it was worth mentioning

As a Game Master this gives so many idea to let players keep playing their character depending on how they die. Very well made, has a great deal of player options and can paint a great twist to a players story and the campaign.
