Zargoth's Tome of Familiars
Publisher: Arcana Games
by Leons P. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/02/2022 07:31:13

This is a really cool book. There is a huge variety of pets, familiars, constructs, animations, and summons organized thematically. I was surprised by how systematic and throrough the book is. For example, fey spirits suitable for my feywild campaign start on page 50 and continue for ten pages.

The art is fantastic, and the level of polish is next-level. Each familiar has a gorgeous, detailed rendering that's on par or even better than the Kobold Press Tome of Beasts or the official Monster Manual.

There is good thought put into the mechanics of acquiring, maintaining, and buffing each type of familiar. There are also some cool feats and magic items.

The authors previously put together the Arkadia setting and Fate of the Oracle campaign, and they've clearly applied their experience to this book

Adventures from the Potbellied Kobold: 15 Adventures for 5E
Publisher: Jeff Stevens Games
by Leons P. [Verified Purchaser]

I'm very happy with Adventures from the Potbellied Kobold. I've been following the author, and I've been delighted by the kickstarter for it.

First of all, I love the framing character -- the potbellied kobold -- as a group patron. I'm planning a new campaign tying together this book and Tales of the Old Margreve. Having the potbellied kobold with the art, character, background, and plot hooks in place immediately answers the question of why the adventuring party comes together, why they are going on a bunch of small missions, and what the light framing plot of the whole campaign is going to be. It gives me the freedom to add more missions onto the existing very solid structure.

The missions themselves read as fun and engaging. I'm looking forward to running them. The art is gorgeous, and the book has clearly been edited with skill and experience.

Storm King's Thunder: Extra Encounters
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Leons P. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/15/2020 18:25:39

This is not very substantive. These are not so much encounters as much as a few back of the envelope ideas given 2-3 paragraphs each. The going rate for this kind of stuff is not $1.99.

These are the five encounters:

  • One additional quest-giving NPC for each of the Chapter 2 towns: Goldenfields, Triboar, and Bryn Shander. The towns already have six quest-giving NPCs each. These specific locations are the least in need of additional quests.
  • One extra brief thing for Chapter 4. It's a good idea, but barely an encounter.
  • One decent encounter idea for Chapter 3, which is usable and potentially fun.

There's better stuff on DM's Guild for Storm King's Thunder.

Mooks are a great concept for making big fights that don't drag. The sample stats are helpful for giving the BBEG and other minor bosses thematic sidekicks.

Izzy's Slightly Used Airships

I was looking for a way to add airships to Tomb of Annihilation and Izzy's gave me exactly what I was looking for. I added a tortle-piloted tugboat that was able to tow the Wreck of the Star Goddess, as well as some airship combat encounters inspired by the guide.

This is a great way to get your players to run the NPCs in a campaign. It turns the NPCs into something like a magic item that gives bonuses or additional actions to the player. I thought it really added to my Tomb of Annihilation campign as a way to manage all the NPCs my players collected in Omu and the Tomb.

Jungle Politics: A Tomb of Annihilation Adventure
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Leons P. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/19/2019 09:02:42

I like Jungle Politics a lot as a way to enliven Dungrunglung and give the players a way to communicate with the grungs in Tomb of Annihilation. My players ended up disguising the Bullywug Empress as Nangnang, wedding her to the Grung king, and sealing a union between the two people. This intersects in interesting ways with how Nangnang is treated in Omu and the Tomb.

One thing I would like to see improved is the fetch quest in Jungle Politics. There need to be more item options, including items with more gravitas.

Do you want bigger, badder, more varied dinosaurs to throw at your cocky players in the jungles of Chult? I have good news for you. How about more undead zombie dinosaurs? I have even better news for you.

Do your polymorphing players want something even deadlier than a T-Rex to polymorph into? Well, there's some Jungle Rot that will fix that right up.

Do you need some mighty beasts to besiege Camp Righteous and Fort Belurian? Get the Beasts.

Hidden Pathways of Chult

This has a couple ideas for connecting Chult better, but they're left at the idea stage. There are no maps, no encounters related to the ideas, no missions that would depend on the ideas, and no obvious way to start incorporating the ideas into Tomb of Annihilation without a lot of prep.

Jungles of Chult Factbook
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Leons P. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/19/2019 08:50:48

This is a compilation of dated Chult lore. The only way it informed my Tomb of Annihilation campaign is that it told me that Ras Nsi was two centuries old, which made me start thinking of him as a snake Napoleon still alive two centuries after the Napoleonic wars. There are some diseases in this one, but I barely used the official Tomb of Annihilation diseases, let alone need to look for more.

Chult: Adversaries and Allies
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Leons P. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/19/2019 08:46:07

There's good art in Adversaries and Allies, but the lore is not up to date with 5e. It is disorienting that Adversaries keeps referring to human Chultans as "Tabaxi", when in fifth edition that only refers to cat-people. The couple missions are disconnected and not ready to run without a lot of prep. The content needs actual connections to the 5e Tomb of Annihilation adventure.

The Guide is a taster of the true awesomeness that is the Tomb of Annihilation Companion by the same author. Try the guide for a taster if you're not sold, or skip straight to the Companion which frankly you need to tie the jungle, Omu, and the Sewn Sisters into a cohesive whole.

Tomb of Annihilation Companion

This is a vital supplement for Tomb of Annihilation. It vastly improves Chapter 2, and makes great additions to the other four chapters as well. I really like how it links many of the random cool things in ToA as well as how it foreshadows the things to come.

For Chapter 1, it makes it actually possible to run a dino race as a DM.

I'm looking forward to using the other refinements on the module once my players get to Chapter 3.
