The House Of Usher is the kind of adventure my player's generally really sink their teeth into. It's filled with mystery and horror elements, it borrows heavily from something familiar to them from the real world, and it rewards thought and planning.

The flavour text, characterizations and use of art and imagery are very well executed here and make it very easy for the DM to 'buy in' and commit to the story telling. There's a little bit of eploration and roleiplaying before arriving at the titular house and once inside the tight environment should provide for a focussed game that won't really allow players to get overly distracted and start losing/wasting time. I'm really looking forward to running this with my group and I Know they'll have a blast.

Having said that I do have 2 minor criticisms (1 of which will not even be a concern for at least half the people who want to run this):

  1. For groups that prefer a 'theatre of the mind' type of D&D game it might take them out of it to really need to use the maps/floorplans during exploration. Personally my group has always gamed on mats or scenery with miniatures so for us (and anyone else who plays that way) it will be a non-issue.
  2. It would really be worth going through the adventure (especially the first few pages) again with an eye to editting. In the first few pages I found a number of spelling errors and in the section describing Edgar The Bard Edgar is at one point referred to as Edward. I was concerned that this would be really distracting but didn't really notice that many errors after about the 9th or 10th page.

Overall I'm really happy with my purchase of The House Of Usher and look forward to running it with my group soon.
