Days of Blight: The Gray Coven

The Pickled Dragon just released the second adventure in the Days of Blight series, and it's truly fantastic! I took my time giving this respectably hefty new adventure a thorough read-through, and I came out with even more admiration for Matt's talent and style. He's an incredibly creative writer and builds a vibe around his stories and locations that is authentic, immersive, and compelling. It's the kind of "feeling" to a setting/adventure that is a bit intangible but really makes the difference between something feeling forced or genuine. That feeling is either there or not, but Matt never lets me down -- he knocked this one out of the park.

Some of the locations in here will find a permanent spot in my sandbox home games going forward (not to mention the adventure itself)! I'm always impressed by how Matt weaves tons of possible story threads together into a site-based adventure that feels very vibrant and alive because of his attention to craft. Of all the D&D writers out there, Matt is consistantly someone I look to when writing my own content. He sets the bar at a place we'd all be lucky to reach!

Even just reading this adventure had me cracking up -- I can't wait to run it!

The author's storycrafting skill turned out a very fun, clever, and entertaining adventure. It's tough enough to pull off evil characters, not to mention humor, but this is a resounding success in both regards. The players will revel in getting to be the bad guys for once -- it's so much fun to smash the overly perfumed and primped enemies who wouldn't think twice about squishing a kobold or hobgoblin in return!

I applaud Matt Rauscher for giving the players strong enough motivation to stick together and for making the misfit maggots just as sympathetic and appealing to portray as any good-aligned PC ever was. The variety and creativity of encounters is inspiring, hilarious, and detailed. And finally, I love the hand-drawn, watercolor style of the dungeon maps.

Seriously, I just read this through a second time for the entertainment value alone. Imagine your group playing through this and you'll be envisioning a lot of laughs, shenanigans, and downright evil heroics!

A+ adventure! This is one of those rare titles that successfully brings in a cornucopia of horror elements without ever feeling "gimmicky." It has has a host of excellent NPCs, and the backstory is so chilling that you may not want to read it late at night. Finally, you get plenty of bang for your buck -- a fully developed village, several beautiful maps, new magic items, and eight (!) modules that create a complete adventure arc. I'm really impressed by this and can't wait to run it for my group!
