My group had a lot of fun with this one-shot. Very memorable scenario with good RP with the townsfolk and investigation in the first half and the horror and combat of the second half. I dropped it into our current events in the Triboar area (forgotten realms) during the summer equinox festivities while they were having downtime following the Sunless Citadel adventure. Took place over two sessions with some other player character activities in the first session. This would easily be a single session if focused only on the plot presented here.

PRO

  1. Village of Womford map and npcs are a handy resource. While my game occurred in Triboar, this village is added to my library to pop out during other travels.
  2. Group enjoyed the investigation and making more connections with npcs in their starting town
  3. Creatures and combat were unique and flavorful - pun intended :) They were horrified and grossed out and still talk about them.
  4. Chain of events is flexible so that some may or may not occur depending on PC actions
  5. One PC is a halfling who keeps going on about pies. How could I not include a module with a pie eating contest!
  6. Amush I did not use in this scenario will be used in a future event - with the elves reskinned as Uthgardt barbarians.

BE AWARE

  1. The infection process is hand-wavy. 100s could be infected already with no end in sight. Like carla could hand out cookies to every kid in town not just the one farmer. My mental solution was the physical transformation was occuring so rapidly, it could only prepare the one victim - the farmer. Then relying upon him for stage 2 of its master plan. And I dropped that Mortimer had already been making practice pies (which then somehow infected the elves for a trail ambush encounter). The eating contest was going to be the mass infection event.
  2. Excorcism and possession is also hand-wavy and easy. This was fine with my group (no cleric), but you may have a player character then wanting to do exorcisms as well. Just be aware if your campaign will have other instances of infernal creatures or possession.
  3. final enemy is a pure melee brute. I added a ranged attack that did acid damage and produced a vomit spawn minion. This help divide the PCs attacks beyond just focus down one target. And further grossed them out.
  4. There's an ambush fight on the trail that I left out. It felt superflous and would have padded out the time to run the second evening. I also found it odd given my comments above about endless infection - if the end boss also infected elves how much further would they have already kept spreading it? Keep it if you really need to drain party resources / spells before the finale but maybe just make them hunters, goblinoids, barbarians or some other random encounter.

I have been DMing for 30 years and I own and operate a Live Action Roleplaying game as well as a gaming store. I have seen many, many, many modules with various levels of production value come and go over the various editions of D&D (and other games I have played) over the years.

For the cost, I could not recommend this module more highly. It is on par - if not better than - just about every other module I have seen produced from just about any source. It is a wonderful introductory adventure, and even works for Characters that are level 1 who want a more hardcore adventure. The horror aspects will actually inspire some fright if run properly, and everything is tied up nicely at the end while leaving room for a great deal of expansion and further development.

While this module can be run in any gaming environment, its default setting is the Forgotten Realms - which will obviously be seeing a lot of gameplay over the coming years as players seek to live out their Baldur's Gate 3 related fantasies. This adventure would be a particularly nice fit for parties comprised of video game to tabletop converts.

All in all I can't recommend this module more highly. It is a must have.

I've run this for four groups, and they all loved it. Great mix of investigation, roleplay, and combat. It's easy to run and easy to adjust. At times it's silly and lighthearted, and at others it's icky and horrifying. If you and your players like horror-comedies, this is the adventure for you! The fight with the final boss could be more interesting. I spiced it up with a couple of unique legendary actions. Otherwise, this adventure works beautifully as is.

This was a pure pleasure to DM. A first part very well written of an investigation based research. I added a cone attack to the Gulabus to help her range a little but everything was well thought out and we had a blast.

I already ran this adventure three times. Me and my players always enjoyed it. I like the mystery in it and that it starts off quite harmless with a pie eating contest and bakers and then turns into horror. I didnt like the encounter with the hunters in the forest and replaced it with something else. The encounter is well written and I will certainly use it in another adventure at some point, but in my opinion it doesnt fit this adventure very well. And I also added some combat abilities for the Gulabus, because otherwise it is only hitpoints and punches. But overall the adventure is one of my favorites and always great fun to DM.

Pretty much the perfect "tutorial" adventure for new DMs. It has tons of social interaction, combat, and mystery. And best of all, it is immensely tunable! There was no way we were going to run the whole thing in 4 hours, with my players being new-ish, but it was absolutely no problem to know which parts of the adventure to cut on the fly to still make it satidfying and interesting for them. I cut a couple of scenes, got them a couple of clues, and it was a blast!

The combat adjustment guides are magnificent (and most of the monsters are in D&D Beyond homebrew.

Finally, one detail that I loved is that it manages to ellicit very visceral reactions without being emotionally heavy or touching in potentially controversial subjetcs. I regaled in the smells and sounds of people wretching and worms wriggling, and it was a blast to see my players' horrified faces as they were transported to the banquet.

All in all, a steal for the money :)

One of the best one-shots available on DM's Guild. An engaging mystery, a plethora of top notch NPCs, an unforgettable pie festival (my campaign is going back next year!), and a change-of-pace ending with a challenging encounter. Is your campaign headed to Waterdeep? If so, you'd be damned not to make sure to have them cross through the town of Womford!!!

Ran this on Novemer 3rd instead of watching the US election coverage. It was so much fun. Upped the game to Lvl-5 characters, and they all handled it pretty well; almost killed one PC.

I really enjoyed running the investigation part. I was able to get in to the roleplaying and make the villagers fun.

I would run this again.

A really enjoyable one-two session long adventure! I was able to incorporate mine into my game of Storm King's Thunder with little difficulty, and I'd imagine it would fit in any game set on the sword coast!

Quick warning though, if you or one of your players suffer from emetophobia, this adventure may need some extra customizing. To accomodate for one of my players, I had to do some reflavoring to keep things comfortable.

This was quite an entertaining one shot. I had incorperated it into the "Princes of the Apocolypse" campaign book and it was a refreshing break from the main story for my players. The festival was an excellent way for them to bond and have a bit of fun before going back to the main quest. The mystery of what was happening also gave my players quite challenge and really helped them, as new players think outside the box and realize what you can do in D&D if you get creative.

My group really enjoyed this as a side adventure when only three of them (5th level) could get together to play. Great mix of roleplay and combat, mystery well-constructed allowing several paths so that the players can make the adventure their own and every PC should get a chance to shine. Well-written and well-organised making it easy to pick up and run, and to customise to my own setting.

EDIT: have now run this adventure a second time and it was just as awesome. The players again loved the construction of the mystery and felt really rewarded from their roleplaying and skill checks, and the product is so well put together that as DM it was a pleasure to run it and roleplay the NPCs.

I bought this for my first DMing half a year ago, we all were new to the game so it took 8 hours to complete the adventure, but we had incredible fun and I lead my own campaign now

Wow! Just DM'd this and everyone loved it. It was easy and had everything you need to do a quick one shot. I have heard this advertised on Crit Academy's pod cast and decided to purchase it. It really was fantastic. Story line was amazing. Only recommendation would be to have pictures of Mortimer, Jacksal, and other characters. Just loved it. Thank you!
