This is actually my favorite of the various "intro" adventures the Adventurers League has done over the years. I've played in it once and run it several times and everyone has enjoyed it every time. In particular, the framing story makes it clear why the PCs actually care about accomplishing their goals and the various mini adventures you go on are all quite fun. Things get perhaps a bit deadlier than is entirely warranted in the adventure with the magmins, but other than that I thought it was well balanced. There is a nice mix of combat and puzzle solving, with perhaps slightly less roleplaying than some might like.

High points from the players perspective were the cursed goblins and hill giant, along with Blooddrinker the Bear, but the rest of the adventures are also quite enjoyable.

While this isn't a standard with my local adventures league, it's a well worn tool in the toolbox. the adventures are small, manageable, self contained, easy to run, easy to play, diverse in genera and scope, and both intuitively fulfilling and mechanically rewarding for new adventurers. The 1-hour play target makes them easy to run as drop-in pick-up-group games during a store game day, and but the tightly interconnected story line and reoccuring characters makes it real hard for people to start in the middle and ruins the experience when someone can't stick around for the whole set.

Excellent module for new players to jump into. 5 really short sessions keeps sessions breathable for players new to D&D. Might be quite bland for seasoned players though. Fun hack&slash episodes mixed with some puzzle solving. Overall a good module to run and play.

These one hour adventures are not as enjoyable for the hard-core AL player, but they are fantastic for new DMs looking to cut their teeth, or for sessions where you want to introduce new players to the game.

I've played and run these at multiple conventions. These 1-hour modules are the best way to introduce people to D&D (aside from LMOP, but the short nature of these modules makes it better for people looking for quick trials).

This module, I felt, provided a good introduction to the season 5 storyline, both hardcover and module, as well as offers a chance for learning about giant culture and understanding a multi-faceted problem of faerun. I also think that the story rewards are fun and can offer a lot of roleplay opportunity.

Recommend Purchase: Yes. XP Range: 350-500

The Season 5 Hardcover (Storm King's Thunder) is an amazing sandbox that spans the entire northwest Swordcoast. Unlike seasons 1-3 these storyline modules actually occur in the same area and mesh well with the hardcover. This is the first season to include the digial certificate for permanent magic items.

Before running any Season 5 module, you should download the following content from DMSGUILD and read it fully:

  • Season 5 Narrative: Parnast, Stagwick, & Beregost Sadly this was released only AFTER the season was over :(

  • A Guide to the Factions of Faerun Lots of Faction stuff in Season 5, so your players should be engaged with the Faction they've chosen.

a Standard 5 part introduction module. Enough story to bring characters into the feeling and atmosphere of Season 5 and the standard 1~ combat plus some puzzles here and there to introduce players to all the needed mechanics of D&D 5e/AL.

Pros:

  1. Even with a full table each part should easily be finished within 2 hours.
  2. Thematic, with decent humour, bountiful flavour and continuing concepts introduced.
  3. All of them play into future adventure plot points released in Storm King's Thunder.
  4. All of them are self-contained, and are just as enjoyable individually as together.
  5. Perfect for new DMs, as they require little prep and are incredibly short on paper.
  6. Punishes players for being shitty/murder hobos, but not too much for a low-level adventure.

Cons:

  1. A little on the deadly side for adventures used to introduce new players to the system, requires some care.
  2. Some of the adventures are clearly longer than others, as a warning to anyone running several simultaneously.

I really enjoyed these modules, especially as a relatively new DM!

My favorite mini module was the first cache, it wasn't confusing to the players, it had quite a bit of humor in it, and it had a unique reward for one of the players.

My least favorite sections were the third module. In the third module, the final encounter is a little confusing in terms of how to describe/roleplay the curse at the end, and the story reward is referred to by two different names, and isn't clear how it is to be applied. I'm assuming that it only comes into play during initiave order, does it have any effect out of combat?

With the fourth module, it was hard to find a fun way to describe the correct steps to disable the rune.

It was also a little confusing to understand why the storm giant in the fifth module would let people leave with the golden tablets while at the same time, warning them of the consequences. It also doesn't really cover what you should do if only some characters take a tablet.

They are great introduction adventures for this season. The combat encoun can be very deadly for unprepared adventurers so take care or go nuts depending on the DM style. The player and story awards are appropriate and fun with one exception that does specifically bear fruit, but can be applied retroactively. The adventure length is an hour a piece but can easily take up to 2 depending on player choice and experience.

Great adventure to get new players interested in Adventurer's League!

The Good:

  • Fun, well written adventures
  • Orients new players to role playing, handling traps, solving riddles, etc.
  • Four of the five maps were clear
  • Story rewards were entertaining

The Not-So-Good:

  • One map wasn't as clear as it could have been
  • Difficult to fit these adventures into an hour a piece (especially for new adventurers)
  • The battles went from slow paced to a group wipe (not saying this is standard, but it happened that way)
  • Not much for loot
  • The full five hour adventure provides less XP than other Tier 1 two hour adventures
