Ran this as a one shot. It was really fun! Some incredibly fun and unforgettable moments. It took us about 15 hours (with breaks) as my groups are completionists of sorts.

I added an encounter in the final room with the ship's AI as an Illithid construct. I felt that it needed a climatic ending (as well as the detonation).

I have to say I was hesitant to run this. Although I own a copy of Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, I generally prefer to keep this level of science fiction out of my D&D games. However I had enjoyed running previous MT Black adventures and needed a 5th level adventure. I figured I would give this a go anyway and let my players experience a twist on the usual D&D adventure.

It took me 3 sessions of 4 hour plus each, to conclude, but I used some of the suggested optional travel encounters and added some of my own. I suspect it could be completed in 8 hours if you cut straight to the main story. Also my players missed a couple of encounters in the ship, due to choices they made.

My players did enjoy the adventure, and there were some great moments, such as the female barbarian losing all of her body hair.

We had quite a lot of fun with it, and I certainly recommend it if you don’t mind this amount of sci-fi in your game.

PS. Be careful when running the Chuul encounter. My players did beat them but it was a close run thing.
