Not the worst thing I've seen, but it needs more ironing and polishing before it's all there... Among other things, the half dwarf has a shorter life span than both its parent races.

Personally I prefer races over the new 5e aspect of lineages. Race actually has ability scores that reflect their heritage. Moving past my soapbox... Sometimes supplemental material values quantity over quality - this product tip toes that line but there are enough gems in here that it is okay - especially for a Pay What You Want product.

Pros - Having subraces for previously used monstrous races like goblins, hobgoblins and kenku were exciting not just to me as a DM but for my players as well and have been used in multiple campaigns. I still am waiting to have a PC play a lesser illithid... I would be so excited to see that roleplay! Drow are a problem... Mind flayers are a totally different kind of nightmare. I had a PC play a myconid druid in an Out of the Abyss campaign and we had a lot of fun with it.

Cons - No artwork for some of the new races that even though there was flavor text involved, I doubt how I envision the race actually reflects what it looks like to the author. Some races have way more racial traits to them to the point that they feel imbalanced and some tend to move in the opposite direction as well. There are a few of these races that are official races at this pont. This needs an update.

Although this book is dated by the time I write this review I still find it an excellent and creative suppliment that is easy to use and reference for players of all expierence levels. Who hasn't wanted to play a Mind Flayer at some point? I have had several players explore the options in this book, the Bladeling is especially nice for 5e. Although the orginization, word choice, and overall layout could use some improvement the creativity alone makes this a 5 star rating.

A fairly well crafted opportunity for players to get a little more exotic with their choices. Is kinda dated, though.

This product is dated a needs updates. which it is not getting. Many of the races have been added into official products since this book's conception, making it redundent. The races are also not balanced, and many of them are underwhelming.

I think several of these need serious revisions. The vast majority of them suffer from far too many unnecessary proficiencies, especially weapon proficiencies. Weapon proficiencies are for the most part covered by class and the only three or so official races that get weapon proficiencies are dwarves, elves and hobgoblins. What you should instead be doing is describing the class which the average member of a race tends to go for in order to convey the image you want. eg many wood elves are rogues and rangers and prefer ranged combat etc

some other things you seriously need to revise are the likes of myconids who are rendered completely unplayable by features like sunlight sickness. you are giving them disadvantage on everything for being in the sun and the only way to negate that when in a sunny place is to have disadvantage on perception and hindered movement? Seriously? Do you want people to play this race or not? Sunlight sensitivity is more than enough to convey that myconids don't like the sun.

I would suggest looking at the DMG as it contains a section on making your own race and subrace. Your races have too many features and some of them are totally pointless. Remember racial stats are what a race is NATURALLY good at, not really meant to reflect preferences eg are they agile, strong wise? do they have claws that do unarmed damage or scales that provide armor? are they touched by magical or planar powers that grant them abilities? The preferences are the responsiblility of the class and once again as stated before you should explain class and playstyle preferences of the race but dont make them a feature.

As a general rule, you should get the following: 2 main features (which can be an ability, innate spells, advantages, resistances though you should avoid giving many classes a resistance unless it SUPER makes sense), a ribbon ability (something relatively meaningless but not so much that there is no point in having it so maybe a proficiency or something along those lines but as stated AVOID armor and weapon proficiencies) and if there is a subrace give an ability in between a ribbon and main ability (nothing too good but something which innately seperates the subraces)

Please be aware this is not to be mean or tear you down, this is my attempt at constructive criticism so you can take it or leave it but id highly recomend you take it.

5e Racial Handbook is a great idea with a little bit more playtesting and revision required to polish it off.

There are over 40 additional Player Character Races and Subraces detailed in this tome but quite a few need playtesting and revision to balance them out. In addition, some illustrations for the new races would greatly enhance this product.

The Handbook also requires further proofreading to tidy up the overall quality of the writing. I would be happy to visit this product again after further revision has occurred as it has great potential.

Although I am not in the business of finding mathematical balance and other technicalities moderm gaming has embarked on, I appalaud the efforts of the author to create an expanded races manual for players to get more options.

It is a fact this is a work in constant evolution and I assume the author is expecting gathering more financial resources to polish this product and eventually chage for it.

The only suggestions I have for the author are next:

  • Give every race a personalized color portrait at the style of the Player's Handbook.
  • Do not mix races information from one another, give any race its own page or group of pages. So people can print only the race needed and no other intrusive information is inside.

This "Handbook" completely throws balance out the window. Several of the races included are outright better than the entirety of the 5e player's handbook. Some races, like the Catfolk, attempt to remain true to their counterparts in earlier editions but miss the mark due to either the author's infatuation or lack of understanding of game mechanics dangerously skewing the handbook from "Fun new options" to exactly what I expect from searching for homebrew online.

I will never ever let one of my pcs play a myconid or a mindflayer. That being said this is really comprehensive and well put together. A lot of people have complained about there not being enough description of the races but I think it's adequate. Furthermore I feel that adding much more text would just make it a slog to navigate, and I really like how quick and breezy it feels to go through in spite of the substantial amount of quality content.

Although the product is unfinished as of right now, the provided content is more than sufficient for developing a variety of characters. While the supplement is lacking in flavor, this is something that is not necessarily needed for a campaign due to the variation between settings, but the creator has nonetheless decided to work on this aspect of the handbook. Thus far, I have thoroughly enjoyed reading through this handbook, and I admire the difference between current official D&D races and this supplement’s. Nothing from this product can be regarded as cookie cutter or simply a cosmetic alteration to a current product; everything in this tome is unique and brings a different presence to the game. Overall, I’m excited with where this product is currently, but I look forward to the addition of lore and more races as well!

I really enjoyed this, and have not seen anything that screams of being too overpowered or unbalanced. A nice selection of sub-races and more exotic races, all detailed with clear rules. As said before, there is very little fluff, and to be honest I am fine with this - I run a homebrew world, and would rather have crunch over Realms fluff any day. If this is a big issue for you then...well, you've been warned. Otherwise, check it out. I thought it was worth a couple of quid!

To me, everything seems balanced. Nothing too over-the-top and all the abilities are thematically accurate. As long as your players aren't munckins, I'd say everything in here is game-ready. Honestly my favourite thing on the DMs Guild right now.

Thanks!
