3 Archetypes #08 - Ranger

Three new archetypes for rangers:

  • Beast Master: A replacement for the core Beast Master, treating the beast companion more like an upgraded familiar. Tasha's Cauldron of Everything ultimately handled this sort of revision better.
  • City Slicker: A ranger designed to operate in urban environments. Good general idea with some neat features, but they didn't seem quite sure if this archetype is supposed to be a super-cop or something broader. (Also not sold on that name.)
  • Marksman: A sniper ranger. Basically this steals features from the assassin rogue, but permits them at range, which is both a niche and balance problem.

Specifically with regards to the Beastmaster:

While I agree this does address a lot of the issues the current Beastmaster has, the Find Familiar aspect is a double-edged sword. Normally a familiar summoned in this way gets its own initiative and can't attack, but this allows it to attack as a bonus action on your turn. This is a core mechanic in combat, and it feels clunky having a familiar's turn and then having to attack on a separate turn.

In my opinion, the Find Familiar mechanic solves the role-playing element of finding a companion in the first place. It also, however, somewhat betrays the inherent exploratory nature and overarching flavor of the Ranger class and Beastmaster as an archetype.

I can definitely appreciate the effort and thought put into making the beast a viable commodity to the Ranger. The ability to summon and dismiss it at will, as well as having no permanent penalty (as though a player character exited the campaign) for the familiar dying seems a bit overpowered to me.

Overall, good ideas and balance for the beast. Average flavor and role-playing mechanics.

AMAZING! This is literally what I have been waiting for ever since I realized that the Ranger (Beast Master in particular) was underpowered. It gives me great satisfaction to say that these archetypes solve the problem for me. It's still the Ranger, so it may seem to some to still be underpowered, but I love it!
