It had a little bit of everything, for a party that was starting playing DnD. Immediate social interaction, for the hooks, the inn at the village, few options to begin with, but not railroady and a nice little dungeon at the end (not in a strait line, which is good). A little bit of lore for the DM to get invested for further reading and a nice twist at the end.

I tried not to spoiler things. I played it with a party of seven, so I had to increase the number of monsters by 25 to 35%. If you play it with 4-5 players you should be ok. We liked to do some more vivid descriptions and we had a blast for 5-6 straight hours.

Just finished running this about two hours ago. I had taken a break from RPGs for a couple years, but made some friends that wanted to be introduced to the game. This adventure was very easy to pick up as a rusty out-of-practice GM and run, and they had a blast! Couldn't recommend enough.

A great introductory module for 5e that consists of a simple dungeon crawl and some social encounters. I DMed it at my local gaming shop, and everyone had a good time. I'm giving this a 4-star review instead of 5-stars, mainly because the final boss battle is not particulary challenging. At least it wasn't for the party of four PCs I ran it with. Depending upon the number of PCs, I would strongly suggest adding a few more monsters to fight in the final "boss room". Maybe a few goblin archers, and/or a few Hobgobin guards. Don't make it overwhelming, but giving the PCs a bigger challenge will make the overall adventure more memorable.

A solid tier 1 adventure.

Nice simple, straightforward plot though the twist at the end doesn't really add anything. A good intro for new players who aren't familiar with some of D&D's tropes, and a good way to teach a range of concepts like combat, exploration, and skill checks.

On the other hand it's very linear and there are gaps and oversights that could have been handled with just a little more detail (e.g. why won't the NPC who's been scouting the location come in with you "under any circumstances"? Without knowing that, it's hard for a DM to gauge their response to players doing something clever and unexpected).

The combat encounters are also highly deadly, especially if players hit all of them. I personally quite like high risk and setups that encourage players to play smart, and sneak, deescalate, or retreat where possible, but YMMV.

Excellent adventure for new players. We didn't find the encounters to be overwhelming, but I was a bit heavy-handed as DM with the hints that the players should approach some of the situations tactically. I think the adventure lends itself well to this kind of play: being straightforward enough to give some hints while allowing the players to make significant risk-reward choices. My party did not explore every single room of the dungeon. Once they defeated the boss they high-tailed it out of there with several enemies chasing them, making for significant drama. But certainly afterwards the party was wondering what was in those other rooms they didn't explore!

"Leave them wanting more" is one of the pieces of DM advice it's taken me a while to appreciate. This adventure has enough in it that the players can skip a few parts, feel accomplished, but still wonder what was in the parts they missed.

Great module for beginner DM and Player. I ran it being new to 5e. allowed me to get the basic mechanics down without a big lift coming from 2.5e.

Easy reading, laid out straight away...easy to keep track of the moving parts and make it come to life for the players.

30 minutes of prep of reading and writing basic stats in the margins of the creatures and I was ready to go. Great job.

Good module. The layout and design is very clear and straight forward, plus the artwork is solid. It was very easy to read once then run, which was nice. This was the first published module I have ever run period, and I found it a good mix of Role Play and combat encounters. As the characters progressed, they guessed quickly who the big baddie was, so I improvised and added another layer to the story. The tail end of this module was expanded by introducing a 5th level Cambion who kills the masked one, because they are no longer needed as a henchmen. This was done in front of the PC's to instill fear. The new baddie then exits, and becomes a recurring Baddie who they will eventually have a showdown with around 4th-5th level. The players had a blast and they dove-tailed nicely into several more home-brew sessions. We're still going on session 9 and loving it. M.T. Black makes good content. Keep those dice rolling! :D

I DMed this for three 2nd level and one 1st level player. They had a blast. DMing would be easy to prep each week if I could find a session as good as this one every time.

Brilliant first campaign for beginner players and a beginner DM.

We managed to get through it with only three players even though one of them was a bit of a glass cannon.

Really well put together supplement and would highly recommend!

Excellent writing and pacing. Balanced just right for a party of 4-5 new characters. Light on backstory hooks and only moderate roleplaying opportunities, but this IS a dungeon adventure. Interesting twist at the end. My family loved playing this module. Great introduction to D&D 5e for new players!. Easily fits in with the starter set as an additional quest, and with a little creative DM'ing, as a prequel to the Hoard of the Dragon Queen or Elemental Evil.

The production values of this product are quite good. Unfortunately the adventure itself is pretty much a straightforward "goblin cave" dungeon crawl like 90%+ of the first level adventures out there. There is one big plot twist, and while I appreciate the attempt to do something creative, it is a twist that I personally found silly and implausable.

For $1.50 I can't complain too loudly about this adventure - I enjoyed it at least as much as the bottle of Mtn. Dew I would otherwise have spent the money on. I would definitely check out other products by this author, but this is one simply did not click for me.

A great one shot for getting started as a DM or to introduce people to the game. Well paced and not too difficult on anyone (especially the DM). Looking forward to playing the level 2 adventure by MTB.

An excellent adventure. I ran it for a new gaming group i was invited into. It was their first time playing 5th edition and they absolutely loved it. Sadly one of the players died opening up the strong box in the final room after combat. The low health sorcerer decided not to wait for the rogue to check for traps and was killed by the posion damage.
