Expanded and Enhanced Background Options

Are the new 2024 Player's Handbook backgrounds feeling too limited and restrictive for your character-building creativity?

"Better Backgrounds" is ideal for players who find the PHB 2024 backgrounds too restrictive or

want to play the 2014 edition with Origin Feats (all included in this book) and the new character creation system.

The background system in the PHB 2024 is too strict, forcing players who want to avoid suboptimal feat and ability score combinations into backgrounds that might not align with their character's vision.

Better Backgrounds fixes this by offering a more flexible and customizable approach, ensuring you can create characters that are both thematically fitting and mechanically sound.

Flexible Ability Scores: Each background specifies three ability scores. Allocate at least +1 to one of these, while the remaining +2 (or +1 and +1) can be freely assigned to any other scores.

Choice of Feats: Select one Origin Feat from two options provided for each background

Customizable Skill Proficiencies: Gain proficiency in one skill and choose an additional skill from a list of three options

Tool Proficiency: Gain proficiency with a specific tool or select one from the Artisan’s Tools category, enhancing your character's utility.

More Background Choices: Explore 26 distinct backgrounds, expanding beyond the original 16, for a richer and more personalized character creation experience.

This seems like an interesting idea. I was gonna check it out, but I see it uses AI-generated art and I have no desire to support those kinds of products.

The 5.2 SDR is not released until February 2025, so I doubt it is "cool" to just copy/paste the newly-released content, especially for merely minor modifications. (Not that I expect anyone cares about the legal side, I barely do. But I'm being nitpicky and gonna point out the obvious.)

Looking at the Acolyte, it looks like this is merely copy/paste and then adding a few minor details to call it different. (Direct complaint: Lucky on Acolyte doesn't even make sense. Lucky does not fit a "it's their god's blessing" excuse)

If any new backgrounds are included, that'd be fine but they should be a separate document.

Regardless, that's setting aside that a Background can always be customized. Instead of paying for a minor modification, just ask your DM, because that's in their power to allow/deny (and you'd need to ask them anyway to use this homebrew).

If this felt like a serious attempt to add something, whether real new options or something innovative,...See more

Hi Jarie,

Aside from the background names and ability scores, I didn’t copy/paste the content. My goal was to create more flexible backgrounds with additional choices (e.g., 2 feats, 4 skills, and less rigid ability score allocations).

While I agree that backgrounds are easily customizable, I know some tables prefer homebrew content to be fully prepared. That’s why I made these backgrounds for my own group^^

On the DMsGuild, we don’t need to wait for the SRD, and we’re allowed to use copyrighted material from WotC (avoiding copying big parts of official books ofc)

If you check out my past content, you’ll see that it’s all original work, not just minor modifications of existing material.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
