New Combat Actions for the Creatures in Eberron: Rising from the Last War

The bugbear chief nurses a gushing wound in her side before issuing an order of retreat to her allies. A bright light forms around the angel’s dying body, blinding everyone near it as it passes on from the world of the living. With blood streaming down its torso, an enraged hill giant slams its fists into the ground and causes the earth around it to quake.

Bloodied & Bruised is a series providing new combat actions for the creatures in the 5e roster. When pushed to their limits in combat, these monsters, critters, fiends, and foes gain new abilities that aid them in battle, or perhaps spell their doom depending on the circumstances. Bloodied & Bruised takes inspiration from the "bloodied" condition from 4e, making entirely new combat actions that can completely change the nature of a fight.

In addition, Bloodied & Bruised also introduces several "death throes" to the game, marking the demise of certain creatures with a grand explosion, heavy fall, or other unique effect to make the slaying of a great monster a truly unique experience.

Examples of Bloodied Actions

Radiant Idol
When bloodied at 71 HP, the radiant idol has the following features.

  • New Ability: Divine Wrath. If the radiant idol is concentrating on a spell while bloodied, its weapon attacks deal an additional 3 (1d6) radiant damage.
  • Trigger Ability: Spellcasting. When first bloodied, the radiant idol can use its reaction to cast a spell that normally requires an action to cast.
  • Death Throes: Font of Celestial Light. Bright light burns in a silhouette of the slain radiant idol. Creatures within 10 feet of the radiant idol when it dies and can see it must succeed on a DC 17 Constitution saving throw or be blinded until the beginning of their next turn.

Warforged Titan
When bloodied at 62 HP, the warforged titan has the following features.

  • Ability Recharge: Sweeping Axe. When first bloodied, the warforged titan’s Sweeping Axe ability is recharged.
  • Frailty: Valuable Cargo. While bloodied and carrying at least one allied creature on either of its platforms, the warforged titan’s speed is reduced by 15 feet (to a minimum of 20 feet).
  • New Ability: Hammer Time. While bloodied, when the warforged titan uses its Sweeping Axe ability, it can make one attack with its Hammerfist as a bonus action.
  • New Ability: Platform Defenses. While bloodied, creatures standing on the warforged titan’s chassis platforms are better protected. Creatures on its platforms gain a +2 bonus to AC as long as they remain on the platform.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
