Welcome to my Eberron. I am telling it to you straight; this is not your father’s Eberron. The year is 1099 YK. Time doesn’t stand still—the technology of the Last War rusts in the dustbin of history. The Houses are still up to no good, always have been. As mercenaries, you ought to choose your clients carefully or you find yourself on the wrong side of a trash compactor. That is all the info you get for free. Now run along, chummer. And remember, keep your head down and protect your wetware—warp bullets come flying from all sides.

Neon Knights is a Dungeon & Dragons adventure optimized for four to six characters. The characters can begin the adventure on 4th or 5th level without needing to rebalance the encounters. To run the adventure, you need the fifth edition core rulebooks (Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, and Monster Manual) and a copy of Eberron: Rising from the Last War (E:RLW).

Hey Evan, thank you so much for getting a copy! I've been thinking about this and if you want to support me monetarily, the most direct way would be via a Paypal donation. If I set it up correctly, you can send along a comment as well. :) Kickstarter is explicitly forbidden for DMsGuild projects and Patreon is just a hassle and takes a cut out of the support on top, just to let you know why I decided on Paypal.

In general, to make more 1099 YK happen, I just need to know that people are behind the idea and interested in more content. Looking at the sales so far, I'm definitely writing another adventure (I have a few ideas in mind). If demand remains strong, I'll have the confidence to sit down and expand the lore with a standalone product. So hyping it up with a Facebook post, Tweet, or review to get more eyes on the series is a big help as well!

Absolutely! I look forward to this. Though as a question, how applicable are the options presented in the Modern Magic Unearthed Arcana article? (Link: https://dnd.wizards.com/articles/unearthed-arcana/modern-magic ) Can they be run without adjustment? Are there options that should be excluded or would have to change to fit? Similarly, is the connected 'My New D20 Modern Campaign' article applicable? (Link: https://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/my-new-d20-modern-campaign )

Wow, I wasn't even aware these existed, thanks for pointing them out! My early thoughts, although I will revisit the material if and when I should write a small setting update book:

I think the info is applicable enough, so I wouldn't stop anyone from using it for an Eberron 1099YK campaign. However, I'm personally more a fan of adapting existing systems, not replacing them with new.

1) So from my side, there wouldn't be new sidearm rules, resistances, and armors. I think everything fits snugly into what we have, no reason to add complexity. In my vision, sidearms are still the exception, not the norm, therefore I would probably handle them like magic items (like I did in Neon Knights).

2) The subclasses in the UA are super cool I think. They have some features I'd personally rebalance, like Block Watch which needs a general nerf and Wire Walk a cap for distance like 60 feet. But overall, they'd fit well.

Cool! I'm glad I pointed them out, then. From what I saw, it seemed like the firearms rules that were added would be the things to get excluded, but the subclasses seemed to be perfect for it. Something I wonder about is the hacking tools the article mentions, because you have your own rules for that as cracking in Neon Knights. Would those end up mixed in, or be discarded?

I had a long think about this. In the beginning, when I was laying the groundwork and creating the cracking mini-game, it was supposed to be a unique thing to the adventure. At that point, the whole idea of "Eberron 1099YK" didn't exist. Overusing the cracking rules for a whole setting will render the mini-game just a tedious and time consuming chore I fear. So I'd introduce the hacking tools like laid out in the UA—and probably some backgrounds to get the proficiency. But I'll leave the mini-game in as a last resort. Basically, if you fail with your hacking tools but REALLY want to get in, you can use the system as a (quite dangerous) backup plan. Additionally, anyone can attempt it, whether they have the hacking tool proficiency or not, which opens the whole process up a bit.

Okay, that makes a lot of sense. I hadn't considered that it might become tedious, because my point of comparison was decking in Shadowrun, which is a lot more time consuming than your system. It makes a ton of sense to do that. With that in mind, what kind of DCs would we be looking at for the cracking portions of the adventure? Even as just a kind of ballpark range?

Do you mean specifically for Neon Knights or in general? Specifically for Neon Knights, you can just use the DC from the Cracking Difficulty table. So for a medium difficulty terminal, attempt a DC 15 Intelligence check using hacking tools to gain access to all functions. If it fails, use the mini-game. In general, I'll decide on a case by case basis for each terminal, machine, firewall, and so on what the DC might be (and the ramifications of a failure).

But I'm also introducing hacking "in person" where you enter a virtual reality to fight firewalls and so on with system maps like in Shadowrun. I'll pick up on that in the follow up adventure {Hack}:Coven. But I only want to use it sparingly as a narrative tool, not a randomly generated mini-dungeon for every little thing.

That makes sense to me. I'll look forward to that. I'm going to try to do what I can to support this endeavor, even if it means making other homebrew to support it and draw attention to it. I kind of lack a social media presence outside of Reddit.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
