The wizard concentrates on her hawk, commanding it mentally to circle the area to look for danger. Watching through the hawk’s eyes, the caster sees a small group of cultists aiming a bow at the spirit and loose an arrow. The vision goes dark as the hawk is killed.

The wizard, shrugging, sits down and begins to cast to summon the familiar into her service once more.

bCPQSyL.jpgOften a tool or blunt instrument, familiars are used by casters to investigate and explore at their whim. Whether it’s using their perception to keep watch or a disposable method to check for traps, familiars are spirits with long memories. Long, long memories.

What if your familiars became loyal—or disloyal—based on how you treat them?

This is a loyalty tracker to be used with the find familiar spell, which will allow the player’s actions to influence their familiar’s behavior.

Cover and tracker art illustrated by Gordon McAlpin! Includes both print-friendly and form-fillable versions.

Oh, I wish my GM would incorporate this in our campaign. As it stands, familiars are a point of frequent contention between the casters as illustrated by a scene from our most recent session:

The dark haired elven girl sits bloody and exhausted cradling her newly recalled familiar in her hands.
"Oh buddy, I'm so sorry you got chomped. I know it was bad, but we had to try to rescue Grimm."
The bird gives her a dark unfathomable look.
"I'm sorry," she conntinues, "If it makes you feel any better, they got me too. I was unconscious-- twice."

Nearby the halfling wizard turns away muttering to herself.
"How can you be so callous?" the elf demands.
"It's just a familiar." the diviner replies, "I have one. I created it. I decide what it looks like and it does what I say."
"It's not! It's a spirit that comes to help you."
The other adventurers shrug. This is the either the second...See more

That is very similar to the conversation we had after one of our games, and lead us to talk through what we thought the Familiar thought. We wanted to lean into the fantasy of having a relationship with your familiar. There are boons to having a strong one vs. throwing your familiar into the wood chipper with disregard. Both are valid of course as you realize your character. Thanks for the comment Amy.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
