The Blackstaff’s Book of 1,000 Spells is the largest compilation of 5E spells ever released, over 300 pages, from the creators behind such titles as Elminster's Guide to Magic, the Player's Companion, Faiths of the Forgotten Realms (I and II), and the Ravenloft Archetypes series (which Critical Role creator Matt Mercer praised as "Really grand content! Well thought out, well presented, and a fantastic supplement to any campaign... Highly recommended!")

The Blackstaff. A legendary archmage, a title passed on as a powerful legacy, and an artifact gifted to the greatest magic-users in the Forgotten Realms. Wizards who have claimed the title of Blackstaff have been able to manipulate time, crush their enemies with a thought, and shatter reality on a whim. Now the secrets of this arcane might can finally be yours with The Blackstaff’s Book of 1000 Spells.

This ancient book of magical secrets and the wisdom of the greatest spellcasters in the Forgotten Realms lives up to its name, with over 1,000 spells for every character class, every occasion, and every level of power. In addition, notes from some of D&D greatest spellcasters-- including Mordenkainen, Elminster, and Laeral Silverhand-- reveal secrets for making the best use of these new spells, and uncover their connections to the ancient lore of Eberron, Ravenloft, the Forgotten Realms, and other settings.

Want to terrify your players? Flummox your Dungeon Master? Rediscover spells from every prior edition of Dungeons & Dragons, from the 1970s to 2020? This massive spellbook, years in the making, can help you achieve all this and more.

Master spells beyond your wildest imaginings, decipher the true nature of magic, learn from some the multiverse's greatest wizards, and take your game to the next level with The Blackstaff’s Book of 1000 Spells!

could you release an updated one were all the font is the same because it ruins searching for spells when half the text of the spells name is in a different font.

I usually look for spells based on their level, not their name. Especially important in this beast! I realize you can't out them by class grouping since there's so much overlap, but I think dividing by casting level then by school could be very helpful. Just some thoughts. I'm sure you've figured out why alphabetical is better.

As an aside, THESE ARE AWESOME SPELLS! Lots of really nasty ones from prior editions that I didn't even know I missed. Thanks *so much* for all the time and effort it took to pull this together!

Do you mind if I get this printed out into a book form at Office Depot or something so I can have a physical copy? I don't want to distribute, just one copy for personal use. I've already bought the pdf.

Just a note, on spell lists; you should consider making a non italic/bold one, it is very hard to read and browse through.

We ended up following the WotC format on this as best we could, but understand from our feedback that the experiences of different customers may vary in terms of readability. We have been trying to think of a solution to increase this product's utility for all readers.

Would buy this in a heartbeat if someone ever did a Fantasy Grounds conversion of this book. (hint hint)

Our Fantasy Grounds converter says he is about 30% done now. So look for that soon!

The preview looks awesome. It would also be nice to know which spell was imported, converted/renamed from what source, or new as a nice piece of history, but that's just me.

Might get this if resources permits.

We thought about doing something like that, but with this many spells and already being at over 300 pages, it seemed like a lot of added page count. However, in many cases, the publication histories of spells inform the various wizardry notes interspersed throughout the book. We try to sneak in a few fun Easter eggs that way!

Absolutely love this book and it's additional content for a somewhat stale selection typically available. especially the expansion for Divination wizards and Sorcerers.
Are there any copyrights or rules preventing the use or mention of this book or spells during a Live stream game ?
I'd rather check prior...

I was taking a look at the Temporal Stasis spell. In the Wizard spells section, it says it is an 8th level spell. In the description, however, it says it's a 9th level one. Which level is it if I may ask?
Customer avatar
Scott B March 05, 2020 11:51 am UTC
Hi, Jesse. I converted that spell from a previous edition. I try to keep converted spells at their original levels, so it should be an 8th level spell.

Any plans for a R20 version? Would be great to have this in DM's compendiums
Customer avatar

My understanding is that the DM's Guild Community Content agreement prevents us from releasing the same product on other platforms. Otherwise, we'd be happy to do it.
Customer avatar
Gari A March 13, 2020 11:28 pm UTC
Is this comment still true? A comment up above says there is a fantasy grounds version being worked on.
Customer avatar
Jeremy F March 14, 2020 6:08 pm UTC

Some kind of agreement exists that allows Fantasy Grounds conversions of DMs Guild products to be published, as long as they are sold here exclusively. I wish I understood more about this, but to be honest I only know what I am told by people more familiar with VTT platforms. It's possible that there is some way of making a Roll20 conversion available exclusively on this website that I am not aware of, but I don't know how that actually works. What I do know is that DMsGuild content can *only* be distributed via DMsGuild, per the community content agreement, so any use of these products has to work around that.

It might be worth asking someone who understands this more than I do. But we are committed to making this content available in as many ways as we can, as long as it is accordance with DMs Guild rules, and whenever we are approached by folx who can do the converting for us we are eager to make it work.

Hello !
Will it be in the next future a POD ?
Customer avatar
Jeremy F February 14, 2020 5:28 am UTC
CREATOR
Unfortunately, this is out of our hands. At this stage, the policy of DMs Guild is that authors can't go back and release titles previously published in PDF for POD. This may change in the future, but for now that option is not available. Maybe if enough people ask for it, the powers that be will permit us to do it, though even if they did say yes, getting a POD book set up is a process that takes at least a month if not longer, so I'm afraid it won't be any time soon.

Love the book!
Can I check: "Decelerating Slash" on Pg 103 doesn't appear under any spell list for any class (and this would have been one of those instances where having the classes in the spell descriptions might have helped, I guess). Which class(es) is it for?
Asking for a friend.
Customer avatar
Jeremy F February 14, 2020 5:20 am UTC
CREATOR
Apologies for this frustrating and unfortunate error. Decelerating strike was a late edition to the book, but was intended to appear on the bard, sorcerer, warlock, and wizard spell lists.

Sorry again for the error, but I hope this answer helps. And thanks for purchasing!

Is there another version that includes the description for Command Another's Pet?
Customer avatar
Jeremy F February 10, 2020 10:37 pm UTC

I need to double check with my co-authors, but I am 70% sure that this spell was renamed, and that the old name should not appear on the spell lists anymore.
Customer avatar
Jeremy F February 11, 2020 12:38 am UTC
CREATOR
Michael, I double-checked and we did rename that spell. Command another's pet became command minor beasts. Due to human error the references to the old spell name were not replaced with command minor beasts. Apologies for the mistake, we will fix it in a future revision, but until then you can just reference the description for command minor beasts.

So I have always wanted to play a necromacer but found the game didn’t have enough necromancy spells that deal damage. How many necromancy spells are in here?
Customer avatar
Jeremy F February 05, 2020 11:52 pm UTC
CREATOR
Approximately 150 necromancy spells. Roughly two-thirds of them are on the wizard spell list.

There were some spells added or removed in editing, but it was very few, but going into that process the exact count was 149, and it can't be more than a handful above or below that in that final product.

Joe P February 05, 2020 2:20 am UTC
Dumb question, here, but... Are all the spells 'wizard' class, or are there warlock and sorcerer spells, as well..?
Customer avatar
Vincente G February 05, 2020 4:34 pm UTC
it does say "with over 1,000 spells for every character class"
Customer avatar
Jeremy F February 05, 2020 9:58 pm UTC
CREATOR
There are spells for every class in the Player's Handbook that casts spells, including warlocks, sorcerers, clerics, druids, bards, rangers, and paladins, as well as wizards. Spells for the artificer from Eberron: Rising from the Last War are also included.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
