The Blackstaff’s Book of 1,000 Spells is the largest compilation of 5E spells ever released, over 300 pages, from the creators behind such titles as Elminster's Guide to Magic, the Player's Companion, Faiths of the Forgotten Realms (I and II), and the Ravenloft Archetypes series (which Critical Role creator Matt Mercer praised as "Really grand content! Well thought out, well presented, and a fantastic supplement to any campaign... Highly recommended!")

The Blackstaff. A legendary archmage, a title passed on as a powerful legacy, and an artifact gifted to the greatest magic-users in the Forgotten Realms. Wizards who have claimed the title of Blackstaff have been able to manipulate time, crush their enemies with a thought, and shatter reality on a whim. Now the secrets of this arcane might can finally be yours with The Blackstaff’s Book of 1000 Spells.

This ancient book of magical secrets and the wisdom of the greatest spellcasters in the Forgotten Realms lives up to its name, with over 1,000 spells for every character class, every occasion, and every level of power. In addition, notes from some of D&D greatest spellcasters-- including Mordenkainen, Elminster, and Laeral Silverhand-- reveal secrets for making the best use of these new spells, and uncover their connections to the ancient lore of Eberron, Ravenloft, the Forgotten Realms, and other settings.

Want to terrify your players? Flummox your Dungeon Master? Rediscover spells from every prior edition of Dungeons & Dragons, from the 1970s to 2020? This massive spellbook, years in the making, can help you achieve all this and more.

Master spells beyond your wildest imaginings, decipher the true nature of magic, learn from some the multiverse's greatest wizards, and take your game to the next level with The Blackstaff’s Book of 1000 Spells!

Any plans for a R20 version? Would be great to have this in DM's compendiums

Hello !
Will it be in the next future a POD ?

Unfortunately, this is out of our hands. At this stage, the policy of DMs Guild is that authors can't go back and release titles previously published in PDF for POD. This may change in the future, but for now that option is not available. Maybe if enough people ask for it, the powers that be will permit us to do it, though even if they did say yes, getting a POD book set up is a process that takes at least a month if not longer, so I'm afraid it won't be any time soon.

Love the book!
Can I check: "Decelerating Slash" on Pg 103 doesn't appear under any spell list for any class (and this would have been one of those instances where having the classes in the spell descriptions might have helped, I guess). Which class(es) is it for?
Asking for a friend.

Apologies for this frustrating and unfortunate error. Decelerating strike was a late edition to the book, but was intended to appear on the bard, sorcerer, warlock, and wizard spell lists.

Sorry again for the error, but I hope this answer helps. And thanks for purchasing!

Is there another version that includes the description for Command Another's Pet?

I need to double check with my co-authors, but I am 70% sure that this spell was renamed, and that the old name should not appear on the spell lists anymore.

Michael, I double-checked and we did rename that spell. Command another's pet became command minor beasts. Due to human error the references to the old spell name were not replaced with command minor beasts. Apologies for the mistake, we will fix it in a future revision, but until then you can just reference the description for command minor beasts.

So I have always wanted to play a necromacer but found the game didn’t have enough necromancy spells that deal damage. How many necromancy spells are in here?
Customer avatar
Jeremy F February 05, 2020 11:52 pm UTC
CREATOR
Approximately 150 necromancy spells. Roughly two-thirds of them are on the wizard spell list.

There were some spells added or removed in editing, but it was very few, but going into that process the exact count was 149, and it can't be more than a handful above or below that in that final product.

Dumb question, here, but... Are all the spells 'wizard' class, or are there warlock and sorcerer spells, as well..?
Customer avatar
Vincent G February 05, 2020 4:34 pm UTC
it does say "with over 1,000 spells for every character class"

There are spells for every class in the Player's Handbook that casts spells, including warlocks, sorcerers, clerics, druids, bards, rangers, and paladins, as well as wizards. Spells for the artificer from Eberron: Rising from the Last War are also included.

This sounds awesome but any Plans for a FG version? I hope so :)

We have had some preliminary conversations on this with the converter who did the FG version of Elminster's Guide to Magic for us. That said, converting this much material would be *a lot* of work, so I don't know how long it would take. I'm reaching out to him again, so stay tuned!

Our FG converter is hard at work on this. He says he's already got the entirety of the framework complete. Now it is simply a matter of making each spell, verifying each spell is on the proper list, and testing each spell on the board for functionality.

Hello, i have recently purchased this, its great from what i have read so far, but i think it could be better! now i don't mean making the spells better or anything but adding what classes they are for in the spell descriptions under duration, it would make it easier to find what spells are for what classes AND having effects right there as well, just a thought have a nice day.

This was considered, but we ended up going with the format WotC uses in their books. Maybe something for a future revision?

It's fine that it is done in that way, the real issue is that there is no way to make a quick search for a specific spell using ctrl + f, since the names for spells aren't selectable and there isn't an index of spells per page, so the best option you have is to go to the section with the correct first letter and just look until you find it.

That said I do love your work!

Frederik, there is an index of spells by page at the end, but we have also added a new version (labeled as "Blackstaffs_Book_of_1000_Spells_BOOKMARKED.pdf") that is bookmarked and searchable. Please take a look at the new file and let us know if it serves your needs better.

Thanks alot! My bad on the index, English isn't my primary language so I was thinking of a table of contents (in the front) but the index works fine. Also the fact that you not only made a searchable edition, but you did it within 24 hours makes me ecstatic that I decided to finally take the step into using money on this site and I will definetly remember your great customer service when I think about buying from you in the future!

I'm looking forward to using this. Will there be a print friendly, searchable version? I often build my enemies thematically, so I'd love the ability to be able to put "fire damage" or "necromancy" in the search engine.

I just searched "fire damage" in my PDF reader and it seemed to work okay. We can do a printer-friendly PDF pretty easily, I think. Will check in with the other creators.

Problem was a PEBKAC--once I turned down the sensitivity and checked "whole words only" it finally started to return only fire damage rather than everything beginning with F. Thanks much!

Sold ... and thanks for the call out in the Special Thanks area. Choking Hands (page 81), would you not also say that failing the saving throw for the round would also prevent them from speaking (the spell is very close to a previous edition spell (called Choke) where casting the spell on a spellcaster who fails the saving throw prevents them from casting spells. Review to follow in a few days

Glad to recognize your contribution to the previous product, Elminster's Guide to Magic, which was this product's grand-dad.

We could look at that mechanic for Choking Hands. It does follow logically. Not sure we want to up the power-level too much, though, so maybe an affected caster has to make some kind of roll to cast spells with Verbal components?

Are these spells reprinted from other products by the contributors, or are they new conversions?
Customer avatar
Jeremy F February 02, 2020 1:00 am UTC
CREATOR
Bit of both. By the end, we calculated it was about half-and-half, roughly 500 new spells and 500 ones that we previously wrote up for other products. So we figured that into our pricing-- even if you own all of the other products our spells have appeared in, 500 brand new spells for $15 still seemed like a decent deal.

Thanks for the question, Stephen. As Jeremy stated, and we updated many of the previously released spells in our proofreading and editing process.

Thanks for the prompt answers, gents! 500 spells for 15 bucks is still a great deal, and your previous works speak well of your talents. Buying it now!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
