"Monster Manual Expanded has plenty that should spark a player's imagination. From enormous mimics to mind flayer assassins to succubi with bardic abilities, there's plenty of monsters to add to a DM's arsenal and turn a good encounter into an instantly memorable one. Best of all, none of the monsters feel overpowered or unbalanced, so DMs can toss these creatures into their campaigns instantly with minimal prep involved." - Comicbook.com (https://comicbook.com/gaming/2019/03/02/dungeons-and-dragons-monster-manual-expanded/)

"The creativity and attention to detail that went into this already makes it must have companion to your MM... you should buy this book and watch your player's jaws drop when monsters they thought they knew prove capable of so much more!"DnD Character Lab (https://www.patreon.com/dndcharacterlab)

"Monster Manual Expanded does a fantastic job of lovingly recreating monsters that were sadly missing from 5e... Whether you're looking to populate your homebrew world or just looking to make that 10th playthrough of Lost Mines of Phandelver a little more interesting, Monster Manual Expanded should be one of your go to resources." - Nerdimmersion (http://www.nerdimmersion.com/)

Monster Manual Expanded is a 321-page source of content that supplements the Monster Manual.  It aims to provide Dungeon Masters more options and flexibility in designing adventures and dressing up their dungeons with a wider variety of creatures and characters that are based on the Monster Manual.  Finally, it also adds variants that provide a nostalgic and classic feel that DMs experienced with the older editions are probably familiar with.

In total, there are over 470 creature stat blocks in this book at the Dungeon Master's disposal!

Maths are off for all Mind Flayer monster variants in the Tentacles attack. The random damage shows 2d10+4 but the average shows 5. I think the average was likely meant to be 15, in this case.

Edit: Removed a comment about Drow since that section has been revised/updated.

Hi Patricio. The table of contents has already been fixed in 1.04, which was released last week. Please download the latest version. :)

But thank you for catching the typo in the tentacle attack damage. I'll have that fixed by 1.05. Expect that version to be uploaded by the end of the week, which should come with improved artwork layout and some new monster images.

Yep, I noticed that after I'd hit enter. I was happy to make that edit.

I'll definitely be checking back for new versions as they get released. Really liking the work so far.

Just wanted to let you guys know that I am very thankful for all the glowing reviews, feedback, and good word of mouth you've done. I want you to know that I'm still investing in the book. More graphical improvements are incoming. I've recently conscripted another artist to provide additional creature art. Expect some stat blocks that have no image representations to finally have one! Expect some of these in the next update! :)

Hi Nick. You're not wrong. Currently, there are no page numbers. I will add those in a later update, when I am sure I will no longer add any new pages. For now, it just serves as an outline of what you can expect inside the book. But the PDF does have a bookmark with links to every statblock.

Love the book! I used the Balor Lord in my game on Saturday, and it gave them a heck of a challenge. (It dominated the fighter right at the start, and the players who thought it was a regular Balor were suddenly terrified. Perfect!)

Any chance you'd do a spreadsheet listing for Kobold Fight Club? That would make the book even more useful. I'd also be interested in a paperbound or hardback version.

Hi Mike! First of, thanks for the review and sharing your players experience with the Balor Lord! Was it able to use its Meteor Strike? ;)
As for the Kobold Fight Club, I'll look into it. Right now I'm a little busy catching up with my day job and also planning out the next book and improving the current one with my artists. But we'll see.
As for the paper/hardbound, I am also looking into that, but it will take a bit more time. Like I said, I'm still improving Monster Manual Expanded. I found a new artist and he'll be working on providing me with additional artwork for the monsters that currently have no graphic representations. I'll keep everyone posted when that day comes!

Any plans on releasing this as a soft cover print option? I don't know if DMsG has an upgrade option, but I'm buying this as a PDF, but I'll gladly get the print version if I don't have to pay for it twice. (Budget conscious and time deprived Dad/DM, here)

Looking forward to using these in my upcoming sessions!

Hi Sean. Not sure about an upgrade version. But believe me I do want to have a print option. However, I think that option is not mine to make. I believe it has something to do with how much sales the book makes first. If it has sold enough and generates enough interest, I'll be contacted by DMG to work on a print option. I've sent inquiries but I haven't heard from them yet. I''ll keep everyone posted. In the meantime, I guess we just be patient. :)

And good luck to your players! ;)

As requested, I have gone through the A Section and this is what I've found. So far all I've focused on is the descriptions, not the Stat blocks.

Bad Bookmark - appears to be working now (prob an issue on my Acrobat Reader DC)

Aaracokra Brave - the word “brave” in the first sentence should be “braves.”

Aarakockra Scout - in the last sentence, “…in detriment of the innocent” should be “in detriment to the innocent.”

Aboleth Overseer - in the first sentence, if the word “realms” is referring to the Forgotten Realms, then it should be capitalized.

Aboleth Slime Lord - in the first sentence, Abyss is spelled wrong and Far Realms is missing the “s” at the end of Realms. In the second sentence of the Acidic Mucus ability, “…secretes is both caustic and sticky” should read “…secretes is both so caustic and sticky.”

Animated Object: Animated Statue - in the description of Faux Golems, “…often crafted...See more

Also, great catches. The Abysm and Far Realm are correctly spelled though. They are specific places. The Abysm is where Demogorgon lives. It's a massive, half-submerged grotesque twin tower palace complex. The Far Realm is the great cosmic alien horror plane of madness where it is said all aberrations originated from.

- Dread Lord of Bane (CR 13 cleric)
- Dreadmaster (CR 10 blackguard)

They should balance out the NPC roster and provide high level villainous options for DMs.

OK - I have most all the Monster books.. for many versions.. in some format or other but if you're playing 5E and especially if you have Players who are Nostalgic, this is Da Bomb!!
Great stuff and (amazingly) worth every penny. Clearly a lot of work put into it. The monsters are pretty thoughtful and more than a few real eye-openers.

It would be wonderful to get similar books for Volos and Mordenkainen's. That coupled with the few other popular Bestiary Books on DM's Guild and I'm pretty sure I'd never run out of great monsters for a lifetime of gaming. Well.. there's other planes that could use populating with new monsters but.. eventually we'll get there I'm sure with Wotc.

An absolutely helpful product. However, I have a few problems with some of the entries.

I cannot figure how a monstrous squid would have attack bonuses that are all over the place (Based off of Str, the attack for both natural weapons should be +8, and the escape DC should be 15 since the Squid lacks proficiency in Athletics), and with a Perception of +6, the passive perception should be 16 (not 14). Even with the corrections, my CR calculator gives an estimated CR of only 5!

I would like to hear how you came to the conclusion that this creature is anywhere near CR 8.

CREATOR
Hi Gage. First of, thanks for purchasing the book! I'm glad you find it helpful! :)

As for the attack bonuses there's a simple explanation. When I create a new stat block, I follow a process. First, I copy a stat block from an existing creature that is closest to the new one. In this case, I copied the young kraken. I then remove any features that the monstrous squid won't need, and new ones that are required. In this case, I added a beak attack which I copied from the owlbear. When I'm done with the copy/removing, I then make the necessary stats adjustments. Somewhere in this process, I probably forgot to make adjustments. I don't want to make any excuses, but when you can only work on this book after you're done working your day job, you tend to lack sleep. :P

In any case, thanks for catching this and I'm going to fix it. You mentioned you found other entries. Please let me know which ones so I can take a look again to check.

As someone who has dabbled in creating monster variants (mostly giant variants similar to some in here), all I can say is "Wow!" and "Thanks!" Very well done! Completely worth the price.

If only there were a way to persuade D&D Beyond to make this a purchasable option.

My only requests would be for a list of creatures sorted by CR, some higher-level (say around CR 15 or so) NPC stat blocks like you have with the Shadow Fist Master (the game is really missing stat blocks for end-game Big Bads, like ultimate fighter, wizard, cleric, and rogue foes for a group), and some more zombie variants (I loved all the skeleton variants, and zombies should at least have a few more as well!). Also, no yugoloth variants? A higher CR ultroloth (or the baernoloth if you want to go back to old 2e Planescape lore) would really be nice to have at the very least (edit, I now see your response to another post about yugoloths, but still sneaking in one or two here would be nice!)....See more

Thanks Thomas! I'll work on adding the CR list. Expect it before the end of the month.

As for the big bad NPCs and zombies, I can't promise that yet. But I'll definitely add those and more zombie variants in the next book. I really just wanted to focus on releasing a 'traditional and more familiar cinematic' zombie than the usual voodoo animated zombie.

And a huge thank you for the typos and corrections. Please keep them coming!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
