Skill Challenges…

The 4th Edition of Dungeons & Dragons has its proponents and detractors, and I have no intention of rehashing edition wars here. Like most players and DMs who have played many (if not all) editions, 4e has its good points, however, and the skill challenge is arguably 4e’s best kept secret.  5th Edition doesn’t make use of them, and I cannot for the life of me understand why, except that 4e challenges don’t directly port over to 5e without modification. There’s math involved in 4e challenges (shocker) that doesn’t translate into 5e’s bounded accuracy.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t use them in your 5e game. You don’t need 4e’s math to balance them, for reasons which will become apparent.

This book gives you the background and advice to make your skill challenges fun and engaging. And they add a great deal of spice to your existing 5th Edition D&D game!  So don't wait—give skill challenges a try at your table.

If you are a creator or DM, buy this!! For less than a dollar you can save yourself countless hours of trying to figure out how to make non-combat encounters engaging. I'd buy this product for $5! No kidding, I seriously mean it. It's well written and [...]

I wholy agree with your introduction. Skill challenges were, by far, the best mechanic in 4e. Bravo on the update to 5e rules! You can be sure I'll use them in my games. Thank you! [...]

OMG ... makes me wonder why it took so long for someone to bring this into 5E ... and that 'someone' is a Legend! Robert nails the technique of 4E back to 5E where it belongs. I can see this being one of those mechanics now being used at the tab [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
