Announcing Grimlore's Grimoire; a 59-page tome of knowledge that contains 191 new spells for DMs and players, balanced for the D&D 5th Edition ruleset!

What kind of a supplement is this?

This supplement has been created as a passion project and released freely to the D&D community as a Pay-What-You-Want title. I've been a DM for years, and with the help of my players, together we have created tonnes of homebrew content. I've decided to take a massive list of homebrew spells that we've used over the years, trim the quirky ones and balance the rest, leaving this book containing 191 new spells covering all spell levels; Cantrips to 9th level.

What are you waiting for? Give your players some new spell options for their characters to employ... or maybe you should teach some of Grimlore's spells to your NPCs! Spice up your encounters with some incantations that will be foreign to your players!

Contents:

  • 191 new unique spells balanced for 5th edition,
    • 31 - Cantrips
    • 34 - 1st level spells
    • 25 - 2nd level spells
    • 25 - 3rd level spells
    • 20 - 4th level spells
    • 22 - 5th level spells
    • 17 - 6th level spells
    • 7 - 7th level spells
    • 6 - 8th level spells
    • 4 - 9th level spells
  • Spells listed alphabetically by level, indicating which classes get each spell,
  • A dedication from the tome's author, Grimlore, wishing those who have found this tome good luck on their adventures,
  • Notes and art included throughout the tome for readers to obtain some insight into the author's thought process,
  • An aditional printer-friendly version of the PDF.

As always, I encourage you to post discussion questions in the comment section below. If you think anything is wildly unbalanced or outside the flavor of D&D, let me know and I will address it! I'm certain that this document will see revisions over the months & years ahead, so please share your input and help make it as awesome as possible!

A Pay-What-You-Want supplement

You may be asking yourself why this magnificent book of spells is being released as a pay-what-you-want supplement... Surely Grimlore, you say aloud, patrons would be lining up to pay for something of such high quality, right?

Its true, they might, and I would thank them profusely for doing so! However, this project was created in part to give back to the D&D community that has been so supportive of my other projects! Honestly, this is just one small way to give back to you all. Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, I'm using this project to raise awareness about a condition that is close to the hearts of my friends and family: Improving the lives of persons with mental disabilities. As such, I will be donating a portion of all proceeds generated from this supplement to a local charity aimed at bettering the quality of life for these individuals. If you have any questions about this, or how you can generate awareness for these awesome individuals in your area, please reach out to me via email: grimlore.entertainment(at)gmail(dot)com.

That said, D&D community, you should feel no obligation to pay/donate anything for this supplement. Knowing I've made someone's game of D&D more enjoyable, in whatever small form that may take, is payment enough!

Note: This supplement has been converted into a Fantasy Grounds module ($4.95). You can check it out by clicking the image below:

A few questions on Pullulate. How large is the area affected? How many plants grow? What happens if the climate has changed or the area has been "paved over"?

Great questions. The spell indicates a single plant seed, so I would rule whatever type of flower / plant / tree comes from said seed. IE a single plant. The area would be the same as the plant occupied before. If the area / climate changed negatively, I would assume the new plant would die at or before it reaches maturity, but this would be up to the DM.

If the spell just grows one seed, what does extinction have to do with it?

Let's back up- what were you envisioning with Pulluate when you wrote it? What is its purpose and why would druids use it over other spells that grow plants?

The vision was more of an RP spell. Maybe regrow the long lost plant that you found a seed. I'm not sure where you mention 'extinction', unless you are looking at an older version?

Pullulate
2nd-level transmutation (ritual)
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Touch
Components: V, S, M (plant seed)
Duration: Instantaneous
Classes: Druid
You plant a seed from a type of plant that used to grow in your current location. Upon touching the ground above the buried seed and speaking a small prayer, the species of the plant begins to regrow, taking 1d4 hours to reach maturity.

I meant local extinction. That is the spell I read, and I still don't get why the phrase "that use to grow in your current location" was included. If it is a spell that makes a plant grow, why does it have to be in a place where its species existed before?

And note this is the only spell that confuses me a bit. The rest are topnotch and I really wish I had thought of Manifest Mimic about 25 years ago.

Thank you for your kind words!

For Pullutate, the idea is that maybe a rare flower or something that was picked but the players found a seed of the plant and they can regrow it - almost a type of spell that can start a quest.

Or Maybe a druid has devoted his life to regrowing a forest that was burned down by a dragon.

Not sure if you updated this as i am looking at 1.25, but the 4th level spell Plague says that a successful Con save extends the duration by 1 hour and that the spell ends when the target makes a successful Con save or dies, whichever comes first. This is a little confusing as to what the Con save actually does.

Also you have Warlock as a source for some 6th level and above spells. A warlock's max spell level is 5th.

Just thought I'd mention, I love this, but there are still a lot of things that can't be copy-pasted. Significant chunks of Silvanus's blessing refuses to be highlighted.

Silvanus’ Blessing
2nd-level necromancy
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Touch
Components: V, S, M (a small diamond worth at least 50 gp, which the spell consumes)
Duration: Instantaneous
Classes: Druid, Ranger
You return a dead beast you touch to life, provided that it has been dead no longer than 8 hours. If the beast’s soul is both willing and at liberty to rejoin the body, the beast returns to life with half of its total hit points, rejuvenated by the blessing of Silvanus.
This spell also neutralizes any poisons and cures nonmagical diseases that affected the beast at the time it died. This spell doesn’t, however, remove magical diseases, curses, or similar effects; if these aren’t first removed prior to casting the spell, they take effect when the beast returns to life.
This spell closes all mortal wounds, but it doesn’t restore missing body parts. If the creature is lacking body parts or...See more

Hi, i was wondering if you had the raw text files for the spell descriptions? i ask because my group uses a app to list and manage spells. id love to use these spells but the only way at the moment to do that is to manually type out every spell descriptiuon and then copy the typed out stuff into the app. any help on this would be great. also just so you ive nearly made it through the cantrips with typing this out and i just had the thought that u might be able to help

looks nice. Noticed an issue right off. First cantrip, Ascending flame. IMHO is slightly overpowered. From 1st through 4th, seems fine. But after that getting an average of 7, 10 at 11th, and 14 temp hit points can be overpowered on a per round basis. Basically you can take an action to remove an average of 14 points of damage dealt to you every round. I would suggest moving it to d4 temp HP for every d6 in dmg.

Benediction on the other hand seems a bit underpowered. The concentration requirement is pretty stiff. Few cantrips require concentration. And it doesn't scale up with levels. You also aren't clear whether they can know the result of the attack, and by how much.

Blood Dagger is beautiful. So very beautiful. You should indicate that reisistance or immunity can't reduce the psychic dmg.

Blood siphon is WAY overpowered. it's really better than vampiric touch. Vampiric touch does 3d6 dmg at 5th level (it's a 3rd level spell) and only heals half. that's an average of...See more

Hi Joseph,

Thank you so much for your feedback! Ascending Flame & Blood Siphon are both strong I agree - I have them edited in a similar manner to what you suggest in a coming update (v1.17).

For Benediction, this is honestly the first I've head about it being weak tbh. I agree that concentration might be a bit much. I'll look at this.

Blood Dagger - the damage is suppose to represent the mental anguish that you go through summoning a dagger in this manner. If you are resistant / immune to this damage type, I think its fair to apply to blood dagger as well. Don't want to limit great features/skillsets that make people feel like a boss for a little cantrip.

In general, you are spot on with all your feedback, and I thank you for taking a look through this supplement! Watch for 1.17 coming out later today!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
