Eldritch Expansion

"Eldritch magic, the powers drawn from those dark beings and forces which exist between the stars. Not as pervasive as the arcane and divine magics wielded by more common spellcasters, eldritch magic always presents an aspect of otherness, a connection to a world which rarely intersects with ours and which strikes ordinary mortals as strange... and dangerous."

Unlock the secrets of the Far Realm and otherworldly magic with this over-70-page supplement for 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons.

The Eldritch Expansion offers new materials for both players and Dungeon Masters interested in the strangest and most other-worldly aspects of the worlds of Dungeons & Dragons. Inside you'll find resources and rules for traversing the Far Realm, calling upon eldritch magics, and battling alien creatures.

Included in this supplement:

  • 10 pages of lore and optional rules for the Far Realm, aberrations, and eldritch magic.
  • 17 magic items, including 3 new artifacts.
  • 2 new races, the Eldritch Scion and Rogue Illithid.
  • The Eldritch Warden, a new class with 3 specialisation options.
  • 9 new class specialisations, including new options for barbarians (the Abomination), bards (College of Unearthly Drone), clerics (Eldritch Disciple), rogues (Slayer), warlocks (The Archangel, The Genie, and the Reaper), and wizards (Eldritch Teurge, School of Voodoo).
  • 24 new Eldritch Invocations
  • 25 new spells, including new "channeled" spells.
  • 19 new monsters, including lore and statblocks for Aspects of Elder Evil, new Beholderkin, Illithidae, and Tsochari.

This supplement includes material adapted from the 3rd edition rulebooks Complete Arcane, Elder Evils, and Lords of Madness, as well as original materials.

Any recommendations to improve the content will be gladly appreciated!

Credit to the respective artists (as specified on page 2). Additional thanks to Scott Tolksdorf for producing NaturalCrit's The Homebrewery, which was used to format this supplement.

  • Updated Warlock "The Genie" patron's Wish-Giver feature to clarify the limits of the ability.
  • dated Eldritch Theurge. Otherworldly Endurance limitted to only provide temporary hit points at trigger. Eldritch Spellweaver brought in line with Eldritch Warden's Soulbound (provides one free use of chosen spell).

This is a great product, but could you find a way to reduce the size of the pdf? The nearly 200mb pdf takes up a huge amount of space on my ipad and portable devices and takes forever to load.

As it currently stands, the size of the PDF is an inevitable result from the size of the content (including images) and the program I used to create it. My best advice at present would be to print the document, or the sections of content you are currently using, if the loading problem is insufferable. (Unfortunately, DM's Guild does not currently allow print copies of community titles, so I can't offer you an official print copy.)

At present there are no plans to produce a full Fantasy Grounds version. If I ever have the time, I will, but in the meantime, I would recommend typing across whatever content you want to use!

The Spells list on page 40 seems to have some formatting problems which is causing the spells to not show up under the proper Class. For example, under Bard there is a blank spot for 5th level and just below that is a 2nd level spell: Blackrot. Four columns over is the Druid which doesn't show the spell level. I am assuming somehow the 2nd level Blackrot under Bard should be 2nd level under Druid instead? And the first four spells under Druid are also 2nd level spells?

Are the first three spells in the second column supposed to be the 5th level Bard spells? Finally the Cleric column seems to be messed up as well. Thanks for any clarification.

Aside form these formatting problems, I am greatly looking forward to integrating this product into my campaign. This was exactly what I was looking for to steer my current campaign in a Lovecraftian direction.

Hello!

My sincerest apologies - I don't quite know how that got through my editing as is, but I will try to sort the formatting ASAP.

The first three spells in the second column do appear to properly be the 5th Level Bard spells. The first set in the Druid spell list are 5th level spells - although I believe the 2nd Level Blackrot does belong with that class. As for the Cleric, Pall of Twilight is a 3rd level spell, so I'm guessing it's just the header got messed up on that.

Again, my sincerest apologies for that - I don't quite know how that's slipped through the many iterations so far! I will try and get it properly formatted ASAP!

Hopefully that should be all sorted now. The error was not in the original document, but in exporting it as a PDF from the software I developed it on - hence why I didn't notice it previously.

Please do inform me of any other formatting or similar issues you find, as although I have made every endeavour to thoroughly edit the document, there is just me working on it, and merely producing the content takes more time than I presently have spare!

Just wondering about the eldritch warden's harrowing touch how do you discern your pool of power. Is it like the paladins lay on hands or is it different. Thanks
Customer avatar
Toby L August 16, 2018 3:17 pm UTC
CREATOR
As specified in the class, the pool contains warden level x 5 points (so a 3rd level Eldritch Warden would have 15 points worth, etc.). So yes, it functions akin to the Paladin "Lay on Hands" feature, and is designed to parallel that.

Hello!

My apologies for the very late reply - it seems my DM's Guild account had decided to stop alerting me to comments left on this page, and I have been too busy to independently check.

I have not at present any plans to adapt this content for Fantasy Grounds; however, given you have raised the issue, I will consider it and may be in contact if I feel that assistance will be useful. Thank you kindly for the advice and the offer of help!

Hey, this is a brilliant pdf but a quick question about the Warden class. one of my players wishes to multiclass into being a The Eldritch Warden. I can't seem to find the PREREQUISITES for how to do that in the actual pdf. I can just make it up but I'm curious as to what the official one is or where to find it in the pdf?

Hello!

My apologies for the very late reply - it seems my DM's Guild account had decided to stop alerting me to comments left on this page, and I have been too busy to independently check.

Regarding your particular question, the details of multiclassing a Warden are not included in the present edition because in 5e, multiclassing is an optional rule (not part of the core content) and so the class has not been initially balanced for multiclass options (as per the classes included in Unearthed Arcana and similar semi-official material).

If you wish to run a multiclass option, I would suggest:

Prerequisites: Dexterity 13 and Charisma 13
Proficiencies: Light armor, medium armor, shields, simple weapons, martial weapons.

I will attempt to include these details in a later update of the document, although I will not now be able to release that until late in the Summer.

Do you think it would be possible to get statblocks for Aspects of Evil of the Great Old Ones, such as an Aspect of Dendar or Great Cthulhu?
Customer avatar
Toby L May 18, 2018 1:57 pm UTC
CREATOR
Hello!

At present, the Aspects of Elder Evil included are all I currently have produced statblocks for, primarily as they are those which I was able to adapt or inspire from official material in previous editions. Per your request, I will attempt to produce more statblocks for other Aspects of Elder Evil soon, however I must warn that I will not likely be able to make substantive work on this document now until late in the Summer.

Thanks for the recommendation, and I will try and introduce it as soon as possible!

Also, some questions about Eldritch Spellblast (Page 32)

1) Is there a reason you chose it to be only AoE spells? For example a Spellblast Crown of Madness would technically not work, though it would be incredibly flavorful for what the class (and source material) is referencing.

2) What happens if the eldritch blast doesn't hit the target? Is the spell slot still used? The text says "If the eldritch blast hits its target...", but doesn't mention if it misses.

3) When you say that the two spells are considered a single spell of 1 level higher, does that affect the Spellblast spell's damage? For example: A Spellblast Fireball cast at 3rd level would be considered a 4th level spell. Does this mean that the fireball does 9d6? Or is that only for purposes of things like Counterspell or Rod of Absorption?

4) Speaking of counterspell; does if a counterspell is cast does that counter both spells?

5) Same question, but for Rod of Absorption. If...See more

With regards to the text about paladins, that was merely a typing error, and will be corrected with the next update! Thank you for pointing that out!

Don't worry about asking questions - it's very helpful for highlighting where the original text is ambiguous or problematic, and so much appreciated! The Eldritch Theurge was a case of attempting to translate a particular prestige class from previous editions into the 5th edition format, and as such it did require a certain level of shoe-horning to make it fit, in part resulting in the ambiguity of expression you’ve pointed out. I’ll try and offer an answer to each of the particular points you raised in this reply, which you should be able to run off short-term, but I will also set about updating the Expansion itself with a disambiguated version of the feature.

1) Originally, this was simply a direct carry-over from the features of the 3.5e prestige class, or an attempt to capture the gist of that. A part of the intention was to prevent...See more

For the Harrowing Mark and Baneful Mark rouge ability,"If the target of your hunter's mark spell is not native to this
plane of existance, you have advantage on attack rolls against
that creature." What is "this plane"? The one the rogue is currently on or always the prime material plain. For example would fighing a devil in the Nine Hells(its home) grant advantage?
Customer avatar
Toby L October 03, 2017 4:46 pm UTC
CREATOR
The intention was to refer to the plane you are currently on. The Slayer is trained to battle creatures infringing upon their own world, and the magic of the Baneful Mark works by targetting that creature's link with its home plane. So in the example given, the rogue would still gain the additional damage from Baneful Mark (as the devil is still a fiend); however, the fiend would suffer no disadvantage.

I will attempt to make this more clear in the text itself as soon as possible!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
