All the Rules of the Game... in One Awesome Book

Tired of hauling all of your D&D rules supplements to the gaming table? Having trouble finding the rule you need? This supplement takes all of the roleplaying game's most important rules and presents them in a single comprehensive, easy-to-reference volume for players and Dungeon Masters alike. In addition to presenting the rules of the game, this supplement incorporates official errata as well as behind-the-scenes designer and developer commentary explaining how the rules system has evolved and why certain rules work the way they do.

For use with these Dungeons & Dragons core books: Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, Monster Manual.

Product History

The Rules Compendium (2007) was compiled and edited by Chris Sims. Note that I don't say it's by Chris Sims, because the material in this tome is taken from a whopping 18 other rulebooks. If you're playing 3.5 D&D and you want a clear and concise quick rules reference without the accompanying flavor text from the original tomes, this is the book for you.

At Your Fingertips. The table of contents for the Rules Compendium is alphabetical, starting at "Ability Score Loss," then "Action Types," and so on until "Weather" and "Writings, Magical." Not good enough? Right next to the table of contents, in the front, is a detailed index that lists the page number for any rule you may be seeking. Good organization is essential for a book like this, and they got it right.

Comprehensive. Rules evolve; anyone familiar with the ever-morphing polymorph rules in 3rd edition D&D can tell you that. This book collects, updates, and explains every rule you'd need to run a game. Class-specific options aren't in here, and you won't find lists of feats. You will find the rules for running combats and games. When you need to quickly learn how to adjudicate underwater combat or counterspelling, this is the book you grab.

Interesting Asides. Want to know how rules get birthed, or how and why rules die? Curious about abstraction vs. simulation and how they affect the rules, or the intersection between rules and fun? The Rules Compendium contains many sidebars and interludes discussing these topics. They make for fun and interesting reading in an otherwise focused rulebook.

About the Creators. Originally trained as a graphic artist, Chris Sims has worked on the Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide, the adventure Demon Queen's Enclave, the Secrets of Sarlona supplement for Eberron, and the 4e Monster Manual. He is an experienced freelance editor and designer.

About the Product Historian

History and commentary of this product was written by Kevin Kulp, game designer and admin of the independent D&D fansite ENWorld. Please feel free to mail corrections, comments, and additions to kevin.kulp@gmail.com.

We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

Can you add the "print" offer on this item? That would be really cool!

Looks like they have, finally, for the main 3.5 rulebooks.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
