Become the Stuff of Nightmares!

Beholders are some of the strangest creatures in existence—capable of reproducing both biologically and by dreaming a copy or variant of themselves into being. When their dreams are focused on trying to understand humanoids, a bizarre mixture of forms can manifest. If they are to survive, these hybrid beings must first escape from their beholder parent, since beholders hate and destroy variation.

These half-beholders vary in appearance, but most have a round head about one to two feet in diameter that resembles a small beholder—with either one or two close-set eyes in front and six to ten eyestalks sprouting from their skull. Their mouths usually contain many sharp, triangular teeth, but can also have uncannily human grins. Their proportionally small-framed humanoid body dangles from beneath their head—some gaunt, others sporting wiry muscles. While they can touch the ground when they choose, their beholder origin grants them the natural ability to hover inches above any stable surface indefinitely.

Half-beholders retain a sliver of their progenitor’s magical abilities, casting cantrips from their eyestalks. With time, they can also learn to use their main eye or eyes to counter a caster’s spell, but the powerful antimagic cone remains outside their ability.

Half-beholders may be born from the chaotic minds of the eye tyrants, but their thoughts are surprisingly humanoid. A half-beholder can become anything they set their mind (and their many eyes) toward, whether villainous or heroic. Document includes a table of half-beholder motivations to help characterize your PC. Also included is a brief sample half-beholder NPC backstory for DMs to use or to help inspire your role-playing.

A rough line drawing of a half-beholder: its head has a central eye and eyestalks like a beholder, but it has a small humanoid body below its head; its feet do not touvh the ground. A crayon drawing of a half-beholder, reminiscent of a child's drawing. It has a toothy grin, and it hovers over a patch of grass.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
