The Solo Adventurer's Toolbox: Sci-Fi / Spelljammer Edition

ADD TO WISHLIST >

5e Solo Gamebooks presents The Solo Adventurer’s Toolbox: Sci-Fi / Spelljammer Edition. This product is similar to the original Solo Adventurer’s Toolbox, but contains resources for running solo sci-fi games, as well as space-fantasy games within the Spelljammer setting (or any setting of your choice). It’s ideal for solo players wanting to explore the infinite cosmos!

This Toolbox contains an oracle, keywords (Spelljammer-focused), Wildspace/Astral Sea exploration tables, ground-based planetary exploration tables, random non-combat encounter tables for many different environs including space stations and Spelljammer cities like the Rock of Bral.

Great for DMs running a campaign such as Light of Xaryxis, who want ideas for random encounters and sidequests to slot in between the different chapters of the main storyline. A solo player running Light of Xaryxis could also use this to branch off on multiple sidequests, and continue their adventures once the campaign is finished

There are also tables for hard sci-fi RPGs: everything from deep space encounters to urban and space station generators, anomaly tables, as well as fully fleshed-out space and planetary exploration systems.

TESTIMONIALS:

The detail level is “just right”, neither getting bogged down in complexity nor leaving you without options. For me, this is just the right level of detail, with tools that can be used or discarded however it makes sense to drive your adventure forward… The book includes a simple system for traveling through the Astral Sea and Wildspace. This… allows for exploratory journeys, uncovering travelers, outposts, and new worlds as you go. A system is provided for fleshing out planets, moons, and civilizations, as well as travel and survival on those worlds… When you come upon an urban settlement, the toolset covers you there as well, with noteworthy tables for settlement type/theme, street travel, landmarks, merchants, and taverns... Overall, this is an excellent set of tools for exploring strange new worlds and meeting new life and civilizations—all by yourself.

Paul Bimler's TSAT Spelljammer Edition is the perfect supplement for any enthusiast of solo-roleplay in science-fiction settings, whether that setting is 5e-based (or not), space opera, whimsical, dramatic or anywhere in between.

Steve Rogers

Being an inexperienced RPG player, using TSAT Sci-Fi/Spelljammer was immediately satisfying. On the first read, I was able to start creating my storyline, following the clear instructions and rolling on the available tables to unfold the story, characters and locations. The open world concept allows me to start the story in any way I’d like, without following a strict plan or steps, leaving space for imagination to flow. The next step will be trying the TSAT Sci-Fi/Spelljammer to play solo on an existing RPG.

Playtested both with 5e and also with classic and contemporary sci-fi RPGs (such as Traveller, Esper Genesis and Starfinder), this product will enable you to generate hours of fun and endless freeform adventures across the timeless gulf of space.

Featuring carefully-chosen art from well-known sci-fi and fantasy artists, as well as gorgeous original cover art by Ari-Matti Toivonen.

Even if you have no interest in solo adventures, this book is invaluable for GMs running any sort of sci-fi campaign, whether that be space fantasy like Spelljammer, or a more traditional, hard sci-fi campaign. Check out a sample of the many and varied space-based resources this product offers:

  • A fully fleshed-out system of mechanics for freeform exploration of Wildspace / Astral Sea.

  • A tool to generate terrain for ground-based planetary exploration.

  • An easy-to-use tool for freeform exploration of urban settlements within the Spelljammer setting (or any setting).

  • An oracle (from TSAT2).

  • A sci-fi themed keywords table.

  • A chapter that will generate unique Spelljamming ships - including crew, spelljammer, captain, ship quirks and much more.

  • A sci-fi / Spelljammer-themed quest generator. Gives you a starting quest and also a quest source and background events that might be happening within your system.

  • All new monster encounter tables, including creature tables for Wildspace, Astral Sea, Urban settlements in Spelljammer, as well as for different planet types and other environs. Encounter calculators adjusted for 1-2 players (Levels 1-20).

  • A wealth of non-combat random encounters for Astral Sea / Wildspace / Starports / Planetary Dungeons / Deep Space (Hard sci-fi) / Space Stations & Facilities.

  • 50 anomalies that you may encounter while travelling through the cosmos.

  • New NPC tools: a Spelljammer-flavoured NPC generator, 100 quick Spelljammer NPCs, and other tools such as the Emotional Reaction Table - very useful for managing interactions between your characters and various NPCs.

There is also an appendix of four different gameplays using 5e Spelljammer, and classic hard sci-fi RPGs.

This is a must-have for the solo player who wants to experience the thrill of interplanetary travel, whether on a Spelljamming Ship or a more classic deep space exploration vessel.

Crew.png

All in all, what you have here is a powerful set of tools to enable a GM to build a one-shot or a full campaign from scratch, or for a solo player to do the same. GMs who get no game time could even build their campaigns as they actually play through them, so they get to experience the surprise of the adventure first! Based on the first and second Solo Adventurer's Toolboxes, that is what this system is all about: freeform solo adventuring where the adventure is generated as you move through it.

So what are you waiting for? Pick up this exciting new Toolbox and go in search of strange new worlds today!

Could we get a printer friendly version of the v1.2 book? I love all your content and want to print this out and bind it into a nice hardcover so I can play screen-less. Thanks for all your work!

Loving this! Playing with a friend since we both DM other campaigns and wanted to just dink around in space with no prep/DM. "Talented &Giffted" you can guess what that is about. Two 8 ft ~500lb Giffs ended up on a goblin ship, I love what dice and some tables can do to you!
Question: is there a table of tables available for this book? I love the table of tables for the other 2. It helps my brain sort all the potentialities.

Hey there! So glad you're enjoying the book :)
I haven't gotten round to doing a table of tables for this one yet, but it's an excellent idea. I've got a bit of time coming up, maybe I'll do it and add as an additional pdf.
Thanks for the support Vermillion!

Hey there! So, I have taken your suggestion to heart and have now completed an index of tables for the book. You'll find it in your library now - you should have gotten an email notifying you of its arrival (as all previous purchasers should have as well). I hope you get lots of use out of it, and thanks again for the support.

Is it possible if I can craft a solo quest for a class like a Sorcerer or Wizard? Asking because it sounds kinda risky to play a character with a small hit die solo.

You could, but you might want to buff your character a bit. Perhaps give them a sidekick. Definitely give them max HP, and make sure they are well-stocked with healing potions. Or, send a barbarian along with them as a companion!

Is it possible to play a game with two characters with different levels?

That's a really good question. Yes, it should be entirely possible, the only area where you could get tripped up is monster encounters and game effects like spells. As far as monsters go, you'd probably want to check out an online encounter generator. You could get the CRs from something like the donjon website, and then use the monsters in this book (which are organized by terrain and CR) to populate the encounter how you want. With spell effects, just reduce the level accordingly... might need a bit of trial and error to get it right. I hope that helps!

How can I use this if I want to play existing adventures?

As outlined in the product description, it's more designed for freeform creation of adventures as you move through them. However, it is good for adding to published adventures - you can use it to add random encounters and sidequests.
My product "The Dungeon Oracle" (cheap at 1.99!) is the product I designed to handle published quests. Alternately, check out Tom Scutt's "DM Yourself" on Drivethrurpg.

If it reaches Platinum sales, then yes definitely! (That's the prerequisite for all DM's Guild products). I really hope it does.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
