The Beastmage is the character background for an occupational spellcaster, known as a magewright, who learns magic, or alternatively, uses magic they knew previously to to ply any animal husbandry trade. Most Beastmages are known for being able to, or at least expected to be able to cast a specialized list of common spells (cantrips to 5th-level) regardless of any spellcasting class they may have or have acquired. The beastmage spell list is drawn from the spells of many spellcasting classes and needn't be exclusive to any class in particular. Beastmages were known for starting play with a spellbook, though they must learn their spells similar to how other prepared spellcasters do. In addition to this, beastmages and other magewrights also have other useful background features, both magical and mundane which flavor their backstory from rollable tables and add granularity to their non adventuring careers. Beastmages are also known for being able to summon familiars from an expanded list of options. As NPCs, some magewrights have the magewright or public service feat which grants them a limited range of spellcasting capabilities which includes casting cantrips and leveled spells without spell slots in a limited capacity, as well as through rituals. As player characters (PCs), magewrights may learn or have previously gained these feats in order to expand upon their magical careers or promote themselves or their adventuring companions during downtime, or as a means for the less fortunate to fund their study of the magic arts. Some may even have been raised in households where magical trades were practiced.
