Introducing MargoMods Sunless Citadel Companion, the ultimate expansion and DM's guide for the classic D&D adventure. Designed for characters of levels 1 to 3, this immersive expansion takes your players on an unforgettable journey. Dive deep with your party into the depths of the Sunless Citadel — a sunken fortress home to warring factions, political intrigue, and the growing threat of twisted plant creatures spilling out of the Twilight Grove below!

No longer simple combat hurdles, the goblin and kobold NPCs herein are brought to life with personality and motives, adding a new layer of intrigue and immersion to the adventure.
Player choices will ultimately decide the fates of not just individual NPCs, but entire colonies!

The Roll20 Addon is now live—Don't miss out on the full Dynamic Lighting experience! Want both? Check out the PDF+Roll20 discount bundle!

Be sure to check out this book's sequel: the MargoMods Forge of Fury Companion! Available now as a Tales from the Yawning Portal discount bundle!

- A redesigned Gulthias Tree fit for a boss fight! Impress your players with a boss fight complete with lair actions, legendary actions, and abilities tuned for a low level adventure as the perfect ending to this adventure!

How big changes are in this module? Would you say players who played original Sunless Citadel few years ago would find it refreshing?

When I've run it for people who have already played through or DMed Sunless Citadel, I've been told it feels quite different! There are new characters and a lot more going on with the kobold and goblin factions as well as new monster stat blocks, expanded combat encounter options, an attempted coup and more. The central villain and the fruit quest are the same, so the central mystery hasn't changed. Hope this helps!

Although I've been playing D&D since the 1980s, I'm a noob DM, so this seems like a likely place to start. The only question I have (at present) is: do I need the original adventure and this is an add-on to it, or is this all that I would need to run the adventure?

This is a great place to start! For a new DM, I recommend having both. My book has expanded content and story/encounter guides for 34 of the 56 dungeon rooms (marked in yellow on the preview maps). The original is especially helpful for the remaining rooms.

My book has a lot for a new DM: 1) dialogue options and character motivations for named NPCs so you always know what they care about and might say, 2) tips for adjusting encounters on the fly, so you can adapt to the inevitability of player chaos, and 3) helpful flowcharts and area summaries so you always know what to expect from each chunk of the megadungeon.

If you or (anyone else reading this) have any questions about running Sunless Citadel or just want to chat about DMing, I'm active on Twitter (@MargoMods) and Instagram (@MargoModRPGs). I'm happy to help however I can!

The campaign does need a spruce up. And this looks like it covers it. Well done!

Sunless citadel is a classic. It's a way to feel heroic for 1st level characters instead of the usual "mop up some kobolds/goblin!" adventure. I am glad someone took the time and care to elevate it to modern day adventures. I hope Forge of Fury would follow.

Hi! The next thing on my list is to finish the Roll20 add-on, which should be ready in a week or two. After that, I'm open to working on a Forge of Fury release, especially if that's what people are most interested in seeing next. It would take at least a few months to be ready.

By popular demand, I've started working on a Forge of Fury add-on. It'll take a bit—it has quite a few maps!

For updates, follow me on Twitter and help me get the word out on these products so that I can do more of this. I'm a one-person show invested in paying fair commissions for artists, so every bit helps :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
