Hi, I just bought the pdf and while I was reading it I thought about the possibility of this adventure being a prequel to curse of strahd, where players wouldn't use their characters but rather knights of the order during the assault. Do you think it's possible?

Hi Rodrigo,
Thanks for purchasing! Absolutely, the intension when writing is that this would be run as a one-shot, prior to running CoS. Something I think is fun would be for your player's one-shot characters (who they would name) to become the revenants in Argynvostholt.

What is the recommended levels of play? Are there pregenerated characters to drop in? this could be a lot of fun as a one off for my players.

The adventure was written for 5th level characters, but is scalable without much additional work. No pregens were included.

Well.. I regret my purchase.. a bit. This is a re-imagining where Argynvost et al survived up until Strahd was turned. That is a mistake for several reasons. Here is my standard diatribe on the topic:

Strahd is a stand in for the real life Vlad Draculae.. so Strahd = Vlad. You see, Strahd's/Vlad's father was the commander of the conjoined military forces of the Holy Order of the Dragon (think NATO commander). When his/their father died, Strahd/Vlad inherited that command. Their father was murdered though treachery (real and fictional). Strahd/Vlad was so angry, he massacred the Terg/Turk soldiers in Borca/Transylvania using both mountain guerrilla warfare tactics and the worlds first hurry-up-offense, which left the enemy flat-footed. He/they massacred the enemy and had them running to avoid being slaughtered.

Now then, once Strahd took Borca and proceeded in to Barovia(Wallachia), he moved on various fronts and actions. However, at one point he ordered Argynvost and his knights to join...See more

Hi James,

Thanks so much for purchase & feedback - it's really appreciated. We totally understand this reimaging of how Argynvost's forces fell at the hands of Strahd might not jive with all of the previous incarnations of Ravenloft lore, but we wanted to create something that works easily with Curse of Strahd, made for players who don't know (or don't care to learn) about the rewrites of lore over the decades.

Don't get me wrong, we're huge fans of Ravenloft, but for a small stand-alone project like this, we felt it would be a unique way for DMs to introduce some of the major players in Curse of Strahd to their players, without the need to dive into ~50 years of lore.

Well, I appreciate that, but like I said, CoS is a hot mess. Just as an example.. Esmerelda has TWO different backgrounds.. in the CoS campaign book. VRGtR adds a 3rd one. Another example.. Strahd's stat sheet.. in CoS? ..yeah, it doesn't even remotely resemble his abilities as they're described in CoS. There are many examples. CHILDREN! Children are murdered in nearly every single scenario in the CoS campaign. I'll guaranty you that neither Chris Perkins nor the Hickman's authorized that nonsense. That was from someone on the WotC editorial staff that needs about a dozen therapy sessions concerning their hatred towards children. Need proof? Nearly every single encounter in CoS has a combination of creatures with abilities that can give just about any party a run for their money. Yet.. there is not one word about how to use these advanced tactics in the CoS book. You can bet good money that Chris Perkins, being the tactical genius that he is, set all of those up, then some.. person.. on the WotC editorial staff...See more

Is the info correct, 17 pages?? I would expect the background of the entire Holy Order of the Silver Dragon and the descriptions of Argynvostholt before its destruction to take up at least 20-25.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
