Sure, you’re a nice DM. You want to give your players what they want. But when what they want is to play “Something from the Monster Manual”, then that’s just not practical. Or is it?

This ruleset can be used to build and play as variations of the chaotic toad demons known as slaad. Slaadi have horrific cycles of reproduction. Slaadi reproduce either by implanting humanoid hosts with eggs or by infecting them with a transformative disease called chaos phage. Each color of slaad reproduces or transforms in a different way, with red slaadi spawning blue and green slaadi, and blue slaadi spawning red and green. Each green slaad undergoes a lifelong cycle of transformation into the more powerful grayand death slaadi. With each transformation, the slaad retains its memories.

Sometimes the spawning stone on the plane of Limbo, from which is the source of all slaadi, spits out a variant slaad who may combine different slaadi traits or generate novel ones. Sometimes this spawning creates a purple, lawful neutral, “gormeel” - a slaad that hates other slaadi. We wholeheartedly suggest that anyone wanting to be a player character slaad does so as a gormeel.

DMs running longer term games often find they’ve written themselves into a corner - getting a PC infected with chaos phage seems like fun and games, right up until the moment the party fails to cure it in time. Faced with the possibility of removing a lynchpin character from the campaign or allowing the player to play on as an abberation, which is the “lesser evil”?

Our approach to playable monsters begins with the use of Tasha’s custom lineages, or the selection of the closest available official race or lineage choice, but we don’t stop there. We break down all of the cooler powers and features of the monster stat block and rebuild them as an optional feat tree. This lets players select the aspects of the monster they find most appealing as the character levels up. By making PCs pay for the cool bits using their ASI increases and carefully arranging the feat tree structures, the power level of the new monstrous PC is kept firmly in line with the rest of the party.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
